Grace's heart fluttered anxiously. "I don't want to think about it."

An icy pit formed in Simon's stomach. He recalled the tight black box tunnel of the SM-13, blood pouring into his mouth as he fought to unplug the black box and swim out of the tight tunnel before he drowned. An overwhelming sense of nausea rose in his throat at the memory of being jammed in the narrow space. "What happens if we lose the entire tank?"

"Bad, bad, bad," Rocky said before Grace could respond. "Already ejected so much astrophage at planet Adrian. Need enough to make it to Erid. Lose entire tank, third of astrophage gone. Trip take much, much, much longer. Too long for Grace Simon."

Simon whistled, brow furrowing low. "No choice then."

Grace nodded. "No choice. I have to." He clapped his hands on either side of his face, psyching himself up. "It's Adrian all over again!"

Excerpt from a fanfic on Archive of Our Own. The excerpt reads: Simon's gaze returned to the ocean on the screens. "Does what happened on Earth with the project still fuck with you?"

Grace puffed out a sigh. "All the time. Less than before, but... it's never gone away. I wake up some mornings thinking I'm back at home and late for teaching my class, and then everything comes back to me, and I remember their knees on my back, holding me down while they sedated me... That was the last time I saw Earth, you know." He frowned, stomach twisting. "Face down in the dang dirt. Grass was dead and crunchy. It was cloudy and cold. Bunch of men piled on me, some of them who were my—who I thought were my friends. Last thing I saw was this guy named Carl staring down at me in his stupidly expensive black trench coat, made him look like Agent J from Men in Black—"

He halted abruptly, voice growing rough, a surge of sadness flooding through him. Grace turned away from Simon as he began to cry, quickly brushing at the tears as they fell down his face. His heart hurt at the memory, a painful ache spreading across his body all the way down to his fingertips and toes, and up into his scalp. It had been a while since he'd thought about it so clearly—the intense, hot wash of betrayal. The way his lungs were squeezed under the weight of the knees between his shoulders, the painful prick of the needle in his arm. Carl's brief twist of sadness morphing into stony indifference as he looked on and refused to help. Grace wrapped his arms around himself and shuddered a sob, embarrassed but unable to stop.

Grace nodded, then hopped up onto his bed, leaned against the wall, and settled in to read a well-loved copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a book he'd found in the belongings of late engineer Ilyukhina. The discovery had surprised Grace, and he regretted never being able to speak with her about it. He thumbed the book open to the dog-eared page, but paused a moment to stare at Simon across the room, taking advantage of the man's closed eyes to ogle while he had the chance.

His wounds were healing well, and he didn't seem quite as pallid as when he'd first arrived. Loose, wavy black hair cascaded down to his shoulders, which were broad and strong. In fact, despite the grim circumstances Grace had found him in, the man was still built like a workhorse. Thick biceps, a wide chest, strong legs—whatever life had been like before, Simon had clearly made it a point to keep himself in good shape.

Grace cleared his throat and dropped his gaze back to the book, burying himself in the latest chapter.

Grace leaned against the kitchen table, staring up at the ceiling. "When I first met Rocky, I tried to run. Their ship approached mine, and it scared the heebie jeebies out of me. I tried to fly off, but they just kept comin', kept catching up, and even sent me messages to convince me to stop running. And when I actually saw Rocky for the first time? Absolutely terrified. Thought I'd get plasma gunned into oblivion, or acid sprayed, or my face eaten off, or any other wild, deadly method of alien murder." Grace smiled fondly at the memory. "Rocky told me later that they were just as scared. But we took a chance on each other. We... we needed someone else. We were both alone out here." He took another long swig from his coffee and sighed, looking back to Simon.

"We were just making a pit stop at that moon, AT-5, because it wasn't on our maps and we were curious. But then I found you in that sub, and I figured we'd take one more chance. I didn't know if you'd be a human, or some eight-headed creature posing as one, but..." He lifted his shoulders in a shrug. "Once I saw you down there, I couldn't just leave you."

Simon's gaze lowered to the coffee pouch in his hand, idly picking at the corner of the bag. "Thank you. I don't..." He frowned, seeking fruitlessly for the right words. I don't understand why you'd do this. I don't know how I'm alive. I don't know if I deserve it.

At 62,910 words and after a lot of editing, my #BloodyMary fic is FINALLY completed. I'm publishing one chapter a week, with two to kick it off. I hope you read and enjoy it bloodymary fans bc I put my whole gd pussy into this.

The summary of an Archive of Our Own fic titled Aqua Regia. The Summary reads: It's four years into their six-year trip to Erid when Rocky insists Grace make a pit stop to visit a moon that definitely wasn't there when the Eridian crew was on their way to Tau Ceti decades prior. Impossibly, tucked into the trunk of a crimson tree, inside a shredded excuse of a submarine at the bottom of a blood ocean, is a man. And Grace can't just leave him there.

Simon should be dead. But he isn't. As a fulfillment of his own plea to live in the last dying gasps before he drowned, the blood tree kept him alive. If you can call unfeeling, unending stasis "living". After eons of darkness, a light breaks through, he's torn from the tree, and Simon finds himself awake aboard a new space vessel with another man anxious for human companionship and a very, very strange little rock.

Faced with dwindling food supplies and a ship breaking down during a trip it wasn't designed to make, Simon and Grace will have to figure out how to make this new normal work and learn how to balance one's ache for companionship with the other's decades of mistrust.
