Persistent rain in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, but no wind, which is odd.
The rain radar of central New Zealand showing a ~100 km wide band on rain stretching north to south, with Wellington just catching the eastern edge of the rain band from an arm of Cyclone Vaianu

Insane amount of rain last night in Wellington, resulting in flash-flooding across the city. Never been more happy about living on a hill (then again, there's been landslides too...) 😬

Still bucketing down in northern Wellington.
Photo looking out over the Seton Nossiter Reserve in northern Wellington. Beyond 50 metres away the view is vague due to the torrential rain.

Live Weather: Flooding in Wellington as more downpours hit central NZ overnight
A resident woke to a landslip hitting their bedroom as others describe rivers flowing down streets in central suburbs.

I don’t know how you’d even begin to try forecasting that. This map (from graphs.gw.govt.nz/envmon/daily...) shows how localised it was. Apparently the mayor said it was 3x the local record rain intensity.
A map showing rainfall intensity across the Wellington region, labelled “1 hour rainfall total (mm) ending 20-04-2026 04:00 (NZST)”. There’s virtually no rain north of central Wellington, and a tiny blob of 75mm+ over the southern suburbs.

Where does the water go when it rains?

What drains. What holds. What floods.

Your council has this information

There have been more weather events in the first 3.5 months of 2026 than the whole of 2025 or 2024

These weather events are not one-offs

They are the new pattern

This isn’t just weather

This is a shift

The rain feels different
because it is different

It is not going back to the old normal

Normal has changed

For every 1° of warming,
extreme weather events become
more frequent and more intense

The earth has warmed 1.5°

Storms, floods, and droughts are not separate events

They are connected.

Kirini @kirinianz.bsky.social · 15/04/2026
Why is this happening
or every 1° the earth warms, the atmosphere holds 7% more water

The earth has warmed 1.5°

Around 10% more water is overhead that has to come back
down

This is the first of our posts, which explains why it's raining so much. We'd love it if you can share with any one interested or concerned and follow us to be informed.
The simple answer
The atmosphere is warmer.

Warmer air holds more water.

It is that straightforward.

Changes in the weather can be frightening, and overwhelming to think about, however there are things we can do to adapt. But first up be informed - information is power.
why are we getting so much rain?

Nature Based solutions work with the whenua. Wetlands, native planting and due restoration reduce climate risk while restoring ecosystems.

We incorporate cutting edge western science, and mātauranga Maori (Indigenous knowledge) to come up with solutions. We're aware there is a lot of talk around climate change effects. We know we need to start planning and implementing adaptation now!
