Right after I complained about how fraud protection is seen as an upsell to Stripe, rather than a core concern to keeping their platform safe, they announced splitting up the fraud product into 4 different tiers. Businesses on the current free tier get downgraded to an inferior service. Great stuff
New Stripe Radar plans and pricing

As fraud on the internet has accelerated over the past few years, we've been rapidly adding to Radar, our fraud prevention product. Last year, we blocked $110B in fraud and shipped dozens of new features. With so much new functionality, we're introducing four tiers—Lite, Standard, Plus, and Pro—and updating pricing.

What this means for you

The version of Radar you've been using is closest to Standard, and you've been receiving it for free. Starting today, you'll receive a free trial of Radar Standard, which now includes broad protection across all payment methods, along with fraud analytics. After the trial ends on January 22, 2027, you'll automatically continue on Radar Standard and be charged A$0.08 per screened transaction.

If you prefer to continue receiving fraud protection for free, you can switch to Radar Lite in one click at any time from the Dashboard. Radar Lite provides essential fraud protection for card payments, powered by Stripe's industry-leading AI models trained on more than $1.9T in annual payment volume. Radar Lite will be included at no additional cost with your payment processing.

In the AI era, we expect new fraud patterns to emerge quickly. To stay ahead, you can upgrade to Radar Plus or Pro for advanced features like custom rules, Adaptive 3D Secure, protection against emerging fraud patterns like free trial abuse, and more. As fraud evolves, so will Radar—we're excited to keep improving to protect your business.

Golden Gate happens to be a codename Apple already used internally for macOS Big Sur. For a moment, when the name was announced in the keynote but before the Apple website went live, The Apple Wiki was the top search result for macOS Golden Gate: theapplewiki.com/wiki/GoldenG...
Screenshot of Google Search Console, filtered to show queries in the past 24 hours containing “golden”. Between 3 and 4 AM Sydney time (10 - 11 AM PST), searches spike from zero to 2,673 impressions and 117 clicks. The average position of the result goes down from 1st to 2.7th, and has jumped around from there.

I can at least appreciate that they don’t gaslight with “We value your privacy” immediately before launching into “We and our 142 partners store…”. Do we really need to make it 80% of the screen height though?
The Verge website with a teal cookie banner visible from the bottom of the page. Or as they call it, a “Privacy Notice”. It starts with “We and our 142 partners store and access personal data, like browsing data or unique identifiers, on your device” and goes on for long enough to make the page almost fully invisible.

Something really, really makes me think someone was trying to prove a point about the lack of value of image models (other than fraud) by releasing a diagram this broken. Like, this went through a pull request and someone approved it. But it’s really hard to say with this company at the moment…
The horrendously broken AI-generated diagram showing how Git branching and tagging are used. Time goes up but commits/merges go down, typos everywhere, lines that make no sense, etc. The usual from an image model basically.

Someone took my spot as the top NSIS developer on WakaTime in 2025. Whoever you are, I’m sorry, this wasn’t a challenge. Nobody should be subjected to this much NSIS.
Two bars, “You” and “Everyone”, for NSIS.
“You” is 44 hours and 23 minutes.
“Everyone” (average of all users who logged time writing NSIS) is 51 minutes.
A tooltip says “The top coder in NSIS logged 100 hrs 5 mins”. I fear for their sanity.

But it’s ok. It was fact checked by Grok 👍 These subtly incorrect but very confident-sounding sentences are the exact reason AI can never be trusted. I spent 5 minutes making sure everything I said above is correct. AI doesn’t, and can’t, fact check itself like this.
SSE2 article was fact-checked by Grok last month (November 27, 2025 at 4:08 PM)

I don’t think anyone here needs more proof Grokipedia is a terrible idea, but here you go: • SSE2 works on any OS that supports SSE1, so, Windows 2000 • SSE2 is a mandatory feature of AMD64, so it didn’t “emerge” with Vista • The Legacy Update page it references makes none of the claims made here
A section of the Grokipedia page on SSE2:

Operating System and Library Usage
SSE2 integration into operating systems began with early 2000s releases targeting x86 processors capable of the extension. Windows XP (NT 5.1), released in 2001, offered partial support for SSE2, enabling applications to utilize the instructions on compatible hardware without mandating them for core OS functionality. Full SSE2 reliance emerged in Windows Vista (2007), where 64-bit installations required processors with SSE2 support to ensure consistent performance across system components.

We’ve reached a point in dead internet where AI is replying to support threads from 14 years ago with `sfc /scannow`. Even if this is intended to summarise the thread, it’s hallucinated things that weren’t discussed. Nobody mentioned reinstalling DirectX, and Legacy Update didn’t exist 14 years ago!
Screenshot of a support forum site that seems to have scraped a Usenet thread. The thread happened 14 years ago over the span of a week, with 5 users. (The user’s issue was that iTunes couldn’t find d3d8thk.dll.)

2 weeks ago, “Dani AI” felt the need to summarise this thread, while injecting many things that were never discussed. The thread never talked about `sfc /scannow`, yet the AI is recommending it. It very vaguely suggests you should do something with “the CBS log” with zero explanation (the link is a support page showing how to run `sfc /scannow`), and links to Legacy Update, which didn’t exist yet. It’s also very sure Internet Explorer plugins (BHOs) are related to a missing Direct3D dll and need to be fixed.

What's the deal with specifically PCIe Wi-Fi cards having ginormous heatsinks? These chips barely get warm. Is it entirely to justify selling it for $45? If this were necessary, we would see them heatsinked in laptops, but nobody does that.
Amazon product image for a Ugreen Wi-Fi 7 PCIe card. It has "WiFi 7" in beautiful ginormous 3D WordArt™. It then has a misleading chart where it compares 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz, where 5 and 6 GHz are both 2882 Mbps, but 6 GHz is displayed larger. Bigger number better.

Things that are known to be certain in life: 1. Death 2. Taxes 3. The certificate icon in macOS remaining unchanged since OS X Tiger
A file named tls_ca.crt has a very pixelated and very old icon that kinda, vaguely, tries to look like a certificate. It’s gold and written in cursive and has the starburst thing I guess.

For some reason, you can change the transparency of the icon, widget, and folder accent color, with expected results of being beyond unreadable.

This really ain’t it. macOS Tahoe RC. All of the tinted modes look pretty bad, but did they completely forget to check contrast on the iMac default colors?
Weather widget in the macOS 26 Tahoe notification center. The system-wide icon/widget style is set to Tinted Dark. The widget is a grey blurred background with dark purple text (default tint color on the purple iMac). The window underneath is white with black text.

The widget is close to unreadable, and the blurred text in the background increases the poor contrast.

There was an app called Rotato that was popular for a bit, it let you put a screen recording in an iPhone 3D model. I saw someone’s app demo where they inserted a 360 flip in the middle for no reason. Just cause it let them do it lol …It seems fitting the first screenshot on their site is tacky too

Toolbars merging and unmerging from the tab bar is my biggest peeve about iOS 26. So much is changing visually here for the sake of saving space, which is great and all, but it’s very distracting and horrible for muscle memory. Not to mention, makes it difficult to write instructions to use an app.

Is anyone else’s App Store on macOS 26 beta 4 showing very few Mac apps in their purchase list? I only seem to have universal apps listed, and the icons are square, which makes me think it’s treating iOS listings as macOS listings.

Because I enjoy pain, I enabled macOS 15.5’s dev preview of clipboard prompts globally. I had to manually allow apps that do clipboard sync - my clipboard manager Maccy, and remote desktop apps. Some like VSCode ask on every ⌘V. Firefox and Pixelmator Pro (!) crash when it displays the prompt.
The Paste from Other Apps screen in System Settings, listing 12 apps that have triggered a paste confirmation dialog. They have been set to Ask, Allow, or Deny.A Problem Report for Pixelmator Pro. On thread 0, in dispatch queue “Client CFPasteboard-Apple CFPasteboard general”, a long stack trace containing the symbol “__CFPASTEBOARD_IS_SHOWING_AN_APPROVAL_DIALOG__” is the culprit. Folders expanding down instead of out is so unbelievably silly. I’m a big fan of them replicating the iOS folder layout in Tabs v2 (which I’ll keep running until it’s broken for good)

Mastodon post by me on 18 January 2024: “I thought I’d try my hand at clarifying the App Store external payments popup:”

Original alt text:

“App Store” full-screen popup parodying the one Apple provided a sample screenshot of today (or the one we previously saw for Dutch dating apps). It’s a wall of long, centered text saying:

So you’ve decided to not give us money. Can you hear the shareholders crying? That’s your fault.

I can’t believe you’ve done this. Mark my words, you WILL be scammed. App developers are not to be trusted in the use of the built-in Safari web browser. Whatever happens next is on you, not us. Apple will not be liable for the 3% you save on your Robux or whatever this is, although we’re totally cool with you giving your credit card details for a dropshipped item you just saw in an Instagram ad. And if you thought you were sticking it to the man, just know we still take 27%. Learn More

For whoever needs to hear this, the Windows blue screen of death isn’t intended for your entertainment. The Microsoft support forums, in their mission to be the most useless website on the internet, has found a new trick: You don’t need humans to write low quality non-answers. AI pretending to be an employee can do it just as well! (Context: WSUS’s deprecation was announced in September)
A Microsoft forum post titled “Clarification on WSUS End of Life and Support Timeline”, posted on the 13th of Feb 2025. The poster is wondering when WSUS will stop being supported, so they can plan accordingly to move off of it.

A reply from an account with 22,706 points and a title of “Microsoft External Staff” says:

As of my knowledge cutoff in October 2023, Microsoft has not announced an end-of-life (EOL) or end-of-support date for Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). WSUS remains a supported component of Windows Server, and Microsoft continues to provide updates and security patches for it. However, it's important to stay informed about Microsoft's lifecycle policies and any potential changes in the future.

For the most up-to-date information on WSUS support, refer to the official Microsoft documentation: [links]

Can you find all the design failures in this screenshot? Answers in the alt text! I really can’t wait for macOS 16 to redesign this again and introduce new bugs that won’t be fixed until the next redesign in macOS 20 🙄
Screenshot of some notifications in the macOS notification center:
- App name is white text floating directly on a white background, with a black shadow making it slightly more visible
- Podcast name and episode name are styled the exact same, despite being “title” and “subtitle” internally
- Titles of each podcast episode are overlapped by the album art, which disappears on hover for some reason
- …Yet, the app icon is always visible, taking up significant horizontal space
- The items have an invisible close button floating off the edge of the top-left corner, which only appears on hover
- To expand and view the app’s custom notification view, a tiny grey right arrow button must be clicked, also appearing only on hover. How does a user know the grey right arrow is a button?
- The items also have an Options button that overlaps the text (but at least it’s a nice, large click target)
