I wanna stress, that whole time, I DID have friends. But it didn't present in the way adults wanted to see from me. Often (not always!) I wanted to draw or read a book or wander around alone with my thoughts during break time. Other times I hung out with other kids. You can't force extroversion!

Now I'm remembering how this pressure from adults to conform combined with bullying from other kids that came later (because they mimicked the adults and picked on me) led me to ideation. Which got me yelled at and sent home. Which isolated me from my actual friends. 🙄 Please let kids be weird!

Oof, big same. Hugs to you. Most adults do not know how to handle kids that have ideation or intrusive thoughts, and simply punish them for it.

There were certainly times before that. Sometimes I was alone when I didn't want to be. But I never liked just playing with random kids I didn't know well when I was little, and apparently this is considered abnormal behavior.

I was a bit of a loner on and off in primary school, but in secondary school I got sent to the councilor's office for "not having friends". I wanted to eat lunch alone, and that was considered intervention-worthy. They questioned me about it for hours and made me feel so shitty about myself.

As kids my siblings and I would pass the controller to each other for stuff like this! Like if I couldn't beat a boss and my brother who had been watching me play did so instead, we still made a fun memory together. A bot isn't sentient. It can't share your passions!

I don't think this is actually AI, I believe it's from a faux taco cookie recipe. Pretty sure those are candied cherries and not tomatoes, and the "meat" is chocolate frosting. The "lettuce" and "cheese" looks like coconut with food coloring. I've baked with glacé cherries a lot.

So I finally went through the Dark Knight 30-50 questline in FFXIV. Put it off for years because I was worried it was overhyped. It's good, but.... (SPOILERS) I mean maybe this is just a localization thing, but it's almost line for line quoting Fight Club at points. Kinda makes things too obvious?

I love that! ❤️ Yeah, I don't understand how anyone can expect kids to be kept on the periphery. When my niece was visiting, she said she wanted to "play swords". I have foam swords in my garage, but she did not know this. We had a sword fight in the garden. It's now one of my favorite memories!

IDK, I don't go over to my friends' houses and expect them to be spotless and sterile. And my friends who have kids include those kids in social gatherings! Those kids live there, I don't understand why you'd expect them to be shunted aside and seen-not-heard in this day and age.

(link to article is upthread) Like OP says, casual hosting back then involved a lot of unpaid, unacknowledged work by women. My friends groups today visit each other at home! But we are respectful of one another's time, capacity, and needs. Dietary restrictions and work schedules are considered.

"I wasn't allowed to attend my mother's parties as a child and she used to yell at everyone beforehand due to the stress of planning them" yeah, great, this definitely sounds like something we should go back to doing, absolutely.

Excerpt from the article:
Even for those who have experienced the fun of a successful soiree, it can still feel intimidating rather than aspirational. “My boomer mother was an incredible entertainer and was always having these dramatically complicated parties,” says Caz (not her real name), who spent her childhood on the fringes of these gatherings, peeking in through the door. “Living up to that feels impossible. But also, she claimed she enjoyed hosting very much, but she was always so stressed out beforehand and she’d yell at all of us all the time, and I don’t want to do that.”

I loved that about it as a child. I was maybe 9 years old? But even at that age, I knew it was a Disney joint, so the fact that she used Disney-owned clips was rather telling. I knew on some instinctual level she was advertising to me.

That time someone dumped a toy house on the cemetery wall and, when I crouched a bit, some ✨ Hollywood Magic ✨ occurred.

Awesome piece! 💙 You captured her vibe so well! I think you got the eyes right, in fact. But the pose is so cool and twisty that you kind of have to mentally untwist to match them up.

It's hard to rank them because they were at different times in my life. ❤️ The ending of Expedition 33 had me ugly-sobbing. I was devastated. ❤️ Kingdom Hearts has torn my heart out a few times. ❤️ The part in Undertale where the song "Undertale" plays. 😭

A screenshot from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Two characters stand facing one another in front of an eclipsed moon in a surreal sky. If you know, you know.

A screenshot from Kingdom Hearts 2. Roxas stands in front of the pod holding Sora in a white void, the walls of the pod opening out like petals of a lily flower.

A screenshot from Undertale. A Frogget says "You're going to be free."

Ooof. Thank you for the info on that, that's good to know. I've been getting them since I was 19 years old, and now at 39, I'm pretty used to them. I know my triggers and thus what to avoid. When "stress" is a trigger, that's not always possible, but I've got some good coping mechanisms, too.

I haven't needed to buy more ink for it yet, but so far I recommend it over the combo color cartridges. It should be able to take ink from 3rd party manufacturers because it's just liquid you pour into the reservoirs, same as large format. All home printers should be like this, IMO!

120

kinoko @kinokosaur.bsky.social · 10/10/2026

I learned to make art prints on a large format printer in university (it was my emphasis for my art degree!) so I know a fair bit about using and maintaining printers. Some years ago I found an Epson printer that has separate, refillable ink reservoirs for CMYK, rather than the combined cartridges.

Not a constant headache for 20 years, but that's how long I've been dealing with getting them occasionally, like once every couple of months. It's part of my life that I have to manage, is what I'm saying. 😓 They'll probably go away for good once I go through menopause, I guess?

kinoko @kinokosaur.bsky.social · 10/10/2026

I'm so sorry! I've been getting the kind with stabbing pain and nausea for 20 years now. 😭 Thankfully, I'm good at recognizing now when one is coming on and stepping away from what I'm doing to rest. I hope you can get some relief!
