In 2017 was 21 years old. I had just a few months prior dropped out of college due to burnout and to move in with my internet girlfriend at the time. I wrote this song in one sitting on my girlfriend's computer for fun. I was a little high - as I often was in my early twenties - and i had just started my second cup of coffee for the day. I was trying to capture the sound and the energy of death electro and trash music that i listened to a ton of when I was 15.

I put it up on soundcloud as a one-off track so my friends could hear it. I didn't even expect to actually release it at that point. The only reason I even actually released it for sale was because bandcamp was doing a fundraiser for the transgender law center the week after where they donated their cut of all purchases made that day. As a young trans person myself (I had only been on HRT for about a year at this point), I wanted to help contribute in some small way. A few weeks later, Devi (of Girls Rituals, Black Dresses, and too many projects to name) had done a remix of the song. I liked it so much i wanted to release it as a collaboration as I had been a huge fan of her work already.

Fast forward to 2026 and it is still almost solely responsible for launching my entire career. It has over 18 million plays cumulatively across different platforms. I still get people coming up to me at shows and telling me stories about how they would listen to that song on the bus to high school in the morning, or they would listen to it instead of doing homework, or when they were mad at their parents. In a sense, my original goal was a success! I was able to give hundreds or maybe thousands of angst-y teenagers the same experience that I had listening to F.O.O.L. and Drivepilot and Owl Vision on the bus in the early 2010s.

Sometimes, I hear a second set of stories from people. About how having already been a fan of the song, and seeing me out and visible as a trans person helped them gain the confidence to start living a life more true to themselves. The gravity of which is not lost on me. To be able to encourage even a small handful of people to be more queer, to be more eccentric, to finally take that mask off is a gift. Transition is lifesaving, and as an old friend of mine used to say, "Whimsy is necessary".

To be able to touch so many peoples lives with my work even in the small way of sound-tracking an emo moment on the way to school is a wonderful, wonderful thing. I thank all of you for giving me that gift. You have changed my life forever.

you don't have to be actively making "inferences" to make a personal insult. if i say "you should be ashamed" and "if i were you, i would be ashamed" they mean the exact same thing, are both personal insults, and neither of them involves making an inference about the person i'm speaking to
