Not sure if #1 includes non-fiction. I got Kai Bird's new bio of Roy Cohn the day it came out. Reading about Cohn was fine--I experience a bizarre vindication reading about assholes. Much harder to read about Trump, though, once he enters the story. Bird rightly condemns both men, but still.

Thanks for this thread's insistence. What we teach needs consideration, too. As the contention that higher ed is for workforce training smothers all other reasons, we've slid into thinking we teach 'skills,' as if the point is simply unlocking the next level, so to speak.

The detecting you describe calls to mind the Robert Caro quote that became the title of the doc about him and Gottlieb (made by Gottlieb's daughter), which was to turn every page. Caro learned to do so as a reporter, but it's a rule to live by in the archive, too.

I've made a mid-(okay, late-)career research change. Last yr, I rec'd an internal grant to pursue that work. This yr, I was asked to serve on the rev panel for that grant program. More committee work, sure, but an arrival of sorts for me in this new area.

My college's policy on course buyouts via grants requires faculty to budget their buyout & fringe so the dean can use the salary savings to cover paid leave (fmla). If the granting body doesn't allow for such budgeting, the faculty must use their pd, or their dept has to cover the cost. Not free.

Faculty at a range of schools who were part of the New Univ Conference in the late 1960s also advocated for de-grading. Though the latter were viewd as radicals rather than mere reformers, both AM and the NUC faculty understood that there is no inherent relation btw grades and learning.
