The right wing crash out over asian students celebrating at a UT football game reveals that all along the true goal of reactionary colorblindness was never “meritocracy” but resegregation. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
Color-blind meritocracy was, for many years, a successful rhetorical strategy for undermining antidiscrimination law and excluding Black people from selective schools and prominent positions. That’s why so many former segregationists seemed to suddenly embrace the concept in the 1970s. For them, resegregation—not color-blindness—was always the goal. As long as the success of some immigrants could be used to paint Black students as undeserving, color-blind meritocracy was good. But now many on the right see a new problem: too many Asian Americans in elite spaces. Their success, therefore, must be portrayed as a sinister theft of real (white) Americans’ birthright.

The declining “social trust” that the administration warned against is, of course, not the fault of these students. The problem is bigots like Bo French who cannot accept into their community people who do not share their race and religion, and those who monetize or otherwise profit from that bigotry by spreading it through social media. Like the proverbial child who kills their parents and asks for mercy as an orphan, they are responsible for the problem they are decrying.

But today, as these same judges are sanctioned, and their institutions are attacked, we need people of courage, vision and determination – qualities that 2026 peace laureate Navi Pillay demonstrates in her work on the bench.

History has shown that a world operating without the rule of law is unjust, unwise and inhumane. The judges – those who guard the thin red line between order and chaos – are therefore highly deserving of our praise.

In awarding this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wants to remind the world that the rule of law – national and international – underpins the system we have set up to ensure peace and resolve conflicts non-violently. Peace requires justice.

If you have to find one person in the world that most represents the opposite of Trumpism, it would be Navi Pillay.

And because I ran out of characters again, she is also a South African of Indian descent who witnessed the imposition of apartheid and represented Nelson Mandela and anti-apartheid activists, specifically getting a Harvard law degree to learn how to use international law to dismantle segregation

My quote of the day Women, minorities and migrants are still discriminated against and abused. The right to development is still not accepted by everybody. Power still corrupts, and leaders are still prepared to sacrifice their people in order to retain it. Navanethem "Navi" Pillay

The international rule of law is clear, and the US is currently on the wrong side of international peace. That was a direct message from the Nobel committee. Sanctions against the international court are wrong and harm global peace. Congratulations, Judge Pillay!

What a fantastic fuck you to the US administration with the selection of Navi Pillay for the Nobel Peace Prize. A non-white, female, South African jurist of the ICJ? What a clear and direct statement.

One of my kids had a pretty bad arm break when he was 4 and was in the emergency room for hours and hours. They had a drawer of stuffies for kids who couldn’t come in with comfort items. I feel like most medical people take extra care with kiddos. Good luck to you and your kid!

The importance of the midterms cannot possibly be overstated. Find your state in the thread below & check your voter status. Make a plan to vote as early as you can and take someone with you. If we show up, we win.

We keep facing this challenge as a nation bc we keep refusing to accept that citizenship is duty, not just rights and privileges. Citizens must be accountable to each other, which means they must first be accountable to themselves.

There are 18.5 million kids under five in the U.S.. It costs the Imagination Library $31 to send each kid one book per month for a year. The $75 billion slush fund Republicans gave ICE could fund the Imagination Library for the next 130 years. It's a political decision to keep kids illiterate

Our 8th graders don't just read about history, literature, and civic ideas — they build with them. A BeaverBot 2.0 would let students turn cardboard and recyclable materials into hands-on models that bring every subject to life, safely and independently.

It's honestly so crazy to me that we're facing a technological revolution that could displace millions of jobs in the middle of a housing affordability crisis and every day we talk about whether a trans woman is playing sports or if someone has a non-Anglo name.

That’s what I’m asking. I’ve worked patterns that will say to work into the “same stitch.” I’m not used to the “last stitch” terminology. Maybe I’m overthinking it?

#crochetsky, I need help. The second row of this pattern reads, “2dc in the last sc.” I finished the first row with a sc. So, I’m doing 2dc in the sc I just crocheted? Or, do I go back to the sc before that?
