Because this country likes to forget what it’s capable of, I take it as a duty to remind us. We sit at the brink of the largest decimation of Black political power since the fall of Reconstruction — a Second Redemption. And the end of Black political power means the end of democracy itself.

My most daring idea is to refuse. Refuse that the end is here. Refuse that AI is the future. Refusal is hope and refusal is in my bones. In the tradition of every badass Black revolutionary women — from Sister Harriet to Septima Clark — I humbly refuse to let the wealthy and powerful tell us that our future is theirs. The future is what we make it. This is a clip from my conversation with @urbanconsulate - you can watch the full conversation on their YouTube page.

Perhaps one day fashion will be taken more seriously. But the question of whether fashion is art, as posed by last night's Met Gala, is answered with a resounding "no" if you look at the community's response. For many people, these outfits are not art but signs of social decay.

This is not so with clothing. Few people consider the farmers, spinners, weavers, dyers, designers, pattern makers, sewers, embroiderers, finishers, and pressers that collaborate to produce something fantastical. I doubt there's much I can say on social media that will change people's biases.

When I see a beautiful painting, even if it's in someone's home, my first thought is not "why is this person showing off?" Even if that person bought the painting and hung it on their wall, I think the artist first. What was their intention? How is their skill? What is the meaning?
A bunch of art on the wall.

Much like how knitting (a feminine-coded activity) is relegated to "crafts," while sculptures (a masculine-coded activity) is elevated to the "arts," it's assumed that this sort of stuff isn't "serious" and thus subject to harsher scrutiny.

— Fashion is a feminine coded interest and thus considered frivolous, whereas masculine-coded interests, such as architecture, are considered "serious." Doesn't matter if a tremendous amount of skilled labor or creativity went into making something, such as the handmade lace or shoulder line below.

But such outfits offend people — really offend people — because people don't think of clothes as anything more than consumables. It's notable to me that the Met Gala gets compared to the Hunger Games, whereas such criticism is rarely levied at the Oscar's red carpet or the Super Bowl halftime show.

To be sure, there's no question in my mind that Wintour made the right decision. The increased spectacle and shift towards corporate sponsors — who use the night for marketing — have raised so much money, the Costume Institute has enough savings to potentially be self-sufficient in a few years.
“Since 2016, we have been putting some money that we raised for the gala aside into a quasi endowment,” Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s curator in charge, said this month.

And by 2030 — possibly as soon as 2028 — the Costume Institute will have saved enough of a nest egg to potentially support its own basic operations for the foreseeable future, no matter what happens in the greater museum economy or with the gala itself.

Along with this year’s inauguration of the new Condé M. Nast Galleries in the Great Hall, which will house the Costume Institute’s blockbuster shows, the endowment fund represents a drastic transformation in the position of the Costume Institute, not to mention its relationship to the party held in its honor.“I, and the museum, always wanted the department to be not as reliant on the gala every year,” Bolton said. “The Met Gala is extraordinary, but sometimes it dwarfs everything.” Besides, the department has been forced to cancel galas twice, in 2002, after Sept. 11, and in 2020, during the early months of the pandemic.

“It was a real wake-up call,” Bolton said of the Covid cancellation. “What if there was another global disaster, and people were like, ‘I can’t come to a party?’” Ms. Wintour, he said, “takes immense pride in every year going higher and higher. But there will be a point where that’s not sustainable.”

A more permanent and reliable solution was necessary to ensure that “we would be safe in terms of the upkeep and the care of our collection and have enough money to take care of ourselves indefinitely,” Bolton said.

If the Met Gala tried to answer whether fashion is art last night, the answer would not come from the objects shown at the gala, but from the discourse on social media. As you can see from reactions, people still primarily see clothes as consumables, akin to shaving creams or office supplies.
