Everytime I hear this talking point from professionals covering the industry I just sigh 😩 no, the indie side cannot support the entire industry and too much fragmentation will actually have worse consequences for job opportunities. The central problem is there's too much supply for the demand.

Good, balanced takes here. To me, the data suggest Game Pass' negative impact on sales is overestimated and overblown by many, much as was the case for both piracy and used games before it. The important insight here is the MS does not appear to have clearly laid out the formula for compensation.

Anyways, studio leads often think games will sell multiple times any reasonable benchmark, and will tend to blame any external factor possible for poor performance while often hoarding credit for any success. Human nature, whatever. But not exactly unbiased folks when it comes to this stuff.

Despite a report this morning, I can confirm that Obsidian is *not* in negotiations to avoid shutting down. Plenty of details are still up in the air surrounding the layoffs (picture will be clear on Monday) but Xbox is keeping Obsidian, according to people familiar with the situation.

Maybe, just maaaaayyyybeeeee the concept of exclusives is considered by some to be far more important than it is in reality. Dedicated PC players weren't buying consoles before console games started coming to PC and they still won't buy consoles once console games stop coming to PC. Shrug.

There is far too much supply in the market compared to the demand. This has been building since BEFORE the covid years that pushed everyone indoors. This was a problem coming out of the 2010s, but it was hidden for several years due to the natural lag of the feedback loop.

As video game hardware prices continue to jump rapidly, this market will lose presence in middle-income households, while lower income households may be removed entirely. Video game players can be expected to shift to low barrier of entry, more accessible gaming options as they get priced out.
