An excerpt from short story, Upstairs Neighbours by D.S. Burton published on crowcrosskeys.com, presented on a muted greyscale banner featuring a mass of clay hands reaching upwards. The excerpt reads: The day we move in, the upstairs neighbours don’t come out to greet us. Our Corolla rattles into the driveway, grits of salt crunching like teeth. A barren brick staircase winds up to their railing-trimmed porch and drawn velvet curtains. A pair of rosy-nosed gnomes stand sentry on either side, their grinning our only welcome.

I'm delighted that Crow & Cross Keys has reprinted my poem, The Fourth Sister Of Eskrigg, in their webzine. It was inspired by the oak trees at #eskriggnaturereserve and how nature ultimately takes the old, to make new. Thanks to #LockerbieWriters for supporting me in the development of this poem.

The excerpt reads: The day our growling bellies officially became a famine, we took the dregs of our food with us to Bible study and spread it on the altar. We tried to forget that the buffet of rolls rescued from the bus trays we carried and dusty boxes of off-brand pasta scavenged from the shelves of supermarkets we stocked was the combined wealth of 20 families. We prayed, squeezing our eyes shut in the hope that they might reopen to find our modest collection multiplied.

this story builds off the tale of the Witch of North Pepperell, a local legend that may or may not be true but persists in the archive nevertheless. I’m so grateful for @crowkeys.bsky.social giving it a lovely home in such great company. I hope you enjoy it 🩶✨🪾
About the Legend
The village of North Pepperell was founded by colonial settlers in the eighteenth century. It was located in Massachusetts, between the Nissitissit River and the New Hampshire border.

According to local legend, an eccentric woman was banished from the village on allegations of witchcraft. During her flight, she cursed the village, leading to its demise and abandonment.

The tale of "The Witch's Prophecy" survives today through a story recorded by Florence Sibley in 1910.

ICYMI, "And If You Must Be Wicked, You Must" is a short story in our 🌟 January 2026 issue🌟 by @keychild.bsky.social about being forced to outsource your anger. Read this one for its refusal of the patriarchy and its embracing of all the right kinds of wicked havenspec.com/fiction/and-...
An excerpt of the short story "And If You Must Be Wicked, You Must" by Elou Carroll, in Issue 21 of Haven Spec Magazine (January 2026). The text reads:

You are looking right at her when it happens. When your hands clench around his throat—his skin bright and warm beneath your fingers.

It should be her with her nails sharp and her knuckles paling. She is behind him with her mouth hanging open. She cannot hold your stare—she looks away and bites her lip. For the first time, you are reversed, as if you were born in the mirror all along. She hunches her shoulders and squeezes her eyes shut.

Then, she looks up. She watches. She must.

The background is the issue's cover art, titled Pile, by Aimee Cozza. It shows a figure with blood around their mouth and on their neck and chest, cuddling a pack of wolves.
