Was so excited to return to the Lands Between to talk about the time Fromsoft finally listened to all my letters and phone calls to make Pro Wrestler Beowulf a boss fight. Hollywood Hulk Hoarah Loux rules and I always learn something about stories when I talk to Aysha. Check it out!

Oh, sorry HAL, didn't know you owned every time this human being sheds tears! My mistake. Make sure you bring your piggy bank to the next funeral she attends, I've got a feeling she's holding out on your intellectual property there

We've finally started uploading episodes to Youtube again, and I'm glad we are, but there is something uniquely galling about being given an AI-driven copyright strike saying we unlawfully used someone else's music, and when you check the clip in question the only sound is one of our actors crying

"But it isn't TECHNICALLY--" Dude, using the term "second cousin once removed" in conversation in this house is grounds for busting your balls for the next fifteen years. Don't be a dork

The performative obliviousness around Zohran's "aunt" is especially goofy because white people will call fuckin anybody their cousin. Cousin's son? Cousin. Mom's cousin? Cousin. Guy who lived on your street and just showed up to three consecutive Thanksgivings? You better believe that's a cousin

"This AI actor can pronounce sentences but details like believably delivering those sentences in ways that create the illusion that this fictional character is a living, growing human being that exists aren't there yet" is a very long way of saying "it can't act"

Absolute 100% indicator that a person has never made art before is when they tell you gen AI is "so close" now because "it's just the details that look weird". Buddy, the details are 90% of what we do. Everyone who has ever tried to draw a hand and ended up with a five-pronged tumor is aware of this

We started planning a little more than two years ago. It's had our sole focus for a full year now. We have about half the season written and a third of it recorded and designed. We are readier than ever. And I'm rebounding constantly between wild excitement and feeling like I'm gonna puke

It's honestly too weird to wrap my head around that we've been working on Thirst in secret for so damn long and some people are going to hear it in six days. Like... We sat on the novel for 5ish years before releasing it, but we knew people liked Juno. This is new and terrifying and so exciting

If you have any interest in American horror - maybe movies in general - you HAVE to go see Sinners (preferably in a theater, if you can) The whole thing is amazing, but one sequence in particular is one of the most beautiful and transcendent things I have ever seen on film. Holy shit. Holy shit!

We're SO excited about this. RQ has already been unbelievably supportive as we're developing Thirst, and they're as hands-off on the creative process as it gets. We couldn't be prouder to join the home of some of the best audio horror around as we prep to launch the ridiculous and horrifying Thirst!

Catch me at the town limits where no matter how many times you talk to me all I say is "Welcome to Boston!" (If you're looking for me, I'll be right next to the big sign that says "WELCOME TO BOSTON")

I am trying not to flatten people like this empathetically because in part I think my JOB is to understand how people tick, but this genuinely stumps me. Does loneliness really extend for these people from a sense that they haven't talked about themselves enough lately? That's... Unspeakably grim.

Genuine question: can someone explain what joy is to be found by talking to something that has no interior self? Like... Isn't the point of idle chat to share ourselves with one another? I mean this in the most concrete sense. At this point, why not draw a face on a piece of paper and talk to that?

This is all set now -- we may replace it in the future once we've had time to research and vet another organization, but the text is deleted. (You may need to redownload the episode for the description to change.) Thank you again, Froggy, and thanks for how you brought this to us!

Yes, this definitely rings different with what we know now! Give me a day to bring it to the team so we can find something to replace it with. Thanks for the heads up.

I don't need the monster to be describable itself, really. But if that's the case you better give me a concrete description of something I can latch onto (the mental/physical sensation of seeing the thing, setting, sound, etc) that makes me feel what you're going for. That's called "mood", bud

Lovecraft's favorite horror shortcut (besides, you know, racism): "the thing in front of me was indescribable" "it was a new color I can't describe" etc Well, tell me something you CAN describe then, Howie, cuz you've clearly got a cool show going in your head and it'd be nice if we could join you

this is maybe trite at this point but it is in your interest to find ways to create things. basically everyone wants you to be consuming nonstop. making stuff, from cooking to photography or whatever, can help you feel more in control. doesn’t even have to be something you share with other people

I should add that not all students are on paper -- some receive IEP accommodations that require keyboard use. But even in those cases in class writing allows you to watch their screen like a hawk to make sure they don't leave the word processor.

In my experience this is already happening Several of my old writing teacher colleagues have phased out long-term process writing for in-class essays on pen and paper. No idea how you're supposed to teach writing anything that would take longer than 50 minutes to compose, though.

Without meaning, school becomes a 12-year waiting room to receive a diploma to enter another lifelong waiting room at work and then you die. For fuck's sake, if education isn't built to teach you how to THINK, what is even the point?

A rule I always had for myself when planning a lesson or assignment for myself was this: "If a student asks me why this task matters/is valuable to their future, what will I say?" Assignments written by one AI and graded by another fail this test completely. They are a waste of our finite time alive

-- tide of "I should get to do homework for other classes right now because you asked for three pages and I wrote three pages" got harder and harder. You aren't done. Reread. Consult the list of revision tools we made together. Find problems. Solve them. And if you're stumped, ask for help.

I gave a lot of time in class just to write and revise because I wanted to impress upon the students that a huge percentage of the work you need to do to create something good LOOKS like doing nothing. It's thinking, taking notes, reading, rereading, reviewing. But every year, fighting against the--

The writing was on the wall for this even when I last taught full-time five years ago. Kids had gotten so used to the idea of work as being "how fat is the stack of papers you have completed" that the hardest thing to teach by far was revision because on a basic level they did not believe in it.

It's depressing how little I'm surprised that the American educational machine, that prizes raw tonnage of work over quality, finds it easier to jump to "let's automate so nobody learns but more work happens" over "let's reduce the work to an amount people could actually, thoughtfully accomplish"

My first psychiatrist said this was so common he hesitated to refer to it as a "side effect" as opposed to just an "effect." He was talking about SSRIs writ large, though -- my most vivid dreams started on Prozac, personally. It hasn't lessened over time for me, even when I switched to Seroquil.

The online-ness of this - the sheer indignity of having to respond with moral urgency to a fucking “fixed that for you” meme - is tactical. They want us to feel sheepish about taking them seriously. Don’t. There is no dignity in their depravity, only smallness of character that must be stopped.

The Massachusetts governor, the city, and the university needs to drop everything to locate and free this girl and make sure this doesn't happen again. This is DEFCON-1. If they do this to someone who wrote an op-ed in a college newspaper, they will do this to anyone they don't like.

Honestly? My co-writer Harley, the actors, & a couple friends. I try not to think about anyone else; it gets bogged down in endless hypotheticals who might love or hate it, & I can't know whether they're even real. If I write something to make a specific actor whose taste I respect laugh, it's good.
