I've provided more than that, honestly read the Jessica Green book. It's good. But if you're set on an ideological answer I don't expect the answer to be satisfactory for you.

The upside is lower emissions through faster deployment of clean technology. The funny thing is I've seen some opponents of the reform even admit that emissions will probably go down, they just don't think it's actually a benefit because they're not that interested in solving climate change

Kevin @kevinrmatthews.bsky.social · 21h
Industrial policy is part of the reason and has made the cost of clean tech come down faster than it would have without it, but the reduction in cost is not simply due that, it's because cleantech is a technology where the fuel is free

Industrial policy isn't the only reason renewables are cheaper though. That's your mistake.

Chinas emissions are set to peak in 2027. Why do you think that might be?
100
Kevin @kevinrmatthews.bsky.social · 22h
If the answer to emissions reductions is economic impoverishment, you don't actually have a strategy to reduce emissions.

Kevin @kevinrmatthews.bsky.social · 22h
And they're also saying it will peak in 2027

But the fact remains, there is no evidence at all that restrictions on fossil fuel projects has ever lead to a reduction in global emissions. There's too much global supply to ever meaningful make a difference. We'll never solve the problem by counting tons. press.princeton.edu/books/hardco...

The fossil fuel industry is very focused on short term benefits, but they're well aware of the long term problem they have, which is why they fund astroturf groups that use current environmental laws to slow down or stop clean energy projects.1/

They had 48 votes for cloture in 2022 with Manchin and Sinema. If they have a majority again in 2029 they'll almost certainly have the votes for cloture. Besides, the "lock in provisions" only really exist if you believe in the economic infallibility of fossil fuels. Even Trump couldn't rescue coal.

Kevin @kevinrmatthews.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
Can you point to the part in the Constitution that requires 60 votes for regular legislation?
100
Kevin @kevinrmatthews.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
If Democrats have a majority in 2029, they don't need 60 votes. Besides, the thing that makes this really appealing is the downward cost curves of renewables

Love Bill, but he still hasn't learned much about economics. Coal isn't on the decline because of green regulations or because we ran out of coal, we just developed much cheaper options for creating electricity.

I often see people argue that clean energy is not reducing emissions, because it just adds to rather than replaces fossil fuels. This argument is deeply misguided – clean energy built since 2005 has displaced 23 billion tons. I dive in over at The Climate Brink:
theclimatebrink.com
What if the world hadn't built wind and solar?
Clean energy does not simply “add to” global energy use; it displaces fossil sources that would otherwise get built.

The major counter to this argument is there's no evidence at all that restrictions on oil and gas development has ever reduced global emissions.

Remarkable: an industry that is dying because it can't compete in the market writes a Republican president, asking him to keep the industry alive by brute force, and he says, ok. What would it take for the GOP to lose its reputation as the "free market" party? Seriously, what would it take?
