The Somolia example mentioning "soil" is very telling. Somolia is suffering from severe drought. So one of the reasons "Somalia is Somalia" is literally the soil! Racism requires you to be profoundly stupid.

In his speech yesterday, Canada PM Mark Carney seemed to try to explain to the President what a “trade deficit” is. You’re not just giving another country 100s of millions of dollars… You’re buying things from them! That you want!
Another prominent justification for U.S. tariffs has been their claim that, since the United States runs a trade deficit with Canada, we were "ripping them off"
But the United States' narrow merchandise trade deficit only exists because the U.S. buys so much of its energy from us.
Canada fuels American growth: supplying 99% of their natural gas imports, 85% of electricity imports, and 60% of crude oil imports. I don't think they want us to stop sending it.
And the comprehensive U.S.-Canada trade balance, which includes the many services - from finance to entertainment - that we buy from the U.S. shows a persistent American trade surplus.
Most fundamentally, trade is about building mutual strength - creating a relationship that benefits both countries.
For example, Canada is the largest customer for U.S. cars - in fact, we buy more American-built cars than the United Kingdom, Japan, and China combined.

The fact that the US government is using xAI at all is terrifying. It is unusably bad. There is an argument to be made whether the Defense Department should be using AI at all. But if it is it should use a tool that actually works.

Car dealerships are also a big part of why electric cars aren't taking off in the US. Dealerships make a ton of money from their service departments and EVs don't require as much service! So many birds with this stone.

"Why AI hasn’t replaced software engineers, and won’t." The decide-execute-deliver sandwich of knowledge work, including software development: www.normaltech.ai/p/why-ai-has...
Figure: Software development consists of three layers: (1) Decision making — problem framing, specification, planning (2) execution — design and implementation (3) delivery — testing, verification, integration, maintenance, etc. Note that these are conceptual layers, not temporal phases. It is common to switch back and forth in the course of a project.

This is how I explained it, in case you were curious.
Good to hear from you. Funny, you’re asking about one of the most technically complicated maps we’ve published. Let me break it down.
Data sourcing. Every day I scrape AAA’s website for its average county gas prices. It’s not all on one page, and it’s not simple. The data exists on https://gasprices.aaa.com/?state=TX , but how do you find it? That’s your first test.
Data cleaning and munging. The AAA data comes with county names – some which align with the U.S. Census Bureau’s county names, but some that don’t. Not only that, to make a county map you need the county FIPS code, that’s a five character string (“01220” or “56299” or the like) that represents that county, it’s what most mapping software uses to know which county you’re talking about. Fortunately, I had already written a python code library that helped me attach FIPS codes to counties (i.e. “Hockley, Texas” becomes 48000). This has to be done programmatically, there are more than 3,000 county-level jurisdictions in the U.S. and there’s just no way you’d want to do that by hand. For the AAA county names that don’t match the Census Bureau’s spelling, I wrote a middleman python script to normalize those names.
So now you have the data. It’s in CSV format. I’ve got another script that uploads that CSV to a public-facing web server.
So now the data’s available on the web. We’ve got something. But we need a map. We built this map with d3, a popular javascript-based library for manipulating SVGs, which are the backbone of web-based data visualizations. We didn’t build this map from scratch – we’d built that map before, for this project, last year. https://www.nbcnews.com/specials/vaccine-divide/ .

Anyway, that’s how it happened. Four incredibly complex steps. I’m sure you have more questions, I’ll do my best to answer them.

What Republicans figured out a long time ago is that laws are only meaningful when the people in charge care about enforcing them. Turning state supreme courts into EXPLICITLY partisan positions is an effective way to overcome the democratic will of the people. See: Florida, Ohio, Virginia, etc
