Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 5hIt’s just regular film as far as processing goes. They used to have a special mail-in service where they would send back lenticular prints. That’s long gone. The thing now is to make animated GIFs. 000
Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 6hI’m wondering if this is a roll that came with the camera. Maybe the original owners never bothered to finish and process their first roll. The camera has virtually no signs of wear. 020
Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 7hIt still had a roll of film in it with one shot left. Took a pic and carefully rewound it. Seems to be working fine. 230
Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 30/09/2026I’m at a conference and the same person has asked questions during two Q&A’s that seem way too perfect. I’m pretty sure she’s generating questions using AI and then reading them into the mic. It’s weird! 150
Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 30/09/2026I post my photography to Instagram where is gets very little engagement. At the same time it automatically posts to Threads, which I barely use. I check Threads and find that the photo posts get a lot more engagement. Threads is a photo sharing app, I guess? 030
Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 30/09/2026I think it was a special developing service that’s doesn’t exist anymore. 110
Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 30/09/2026The trend these days is to scan the negatives and make animated GIFs. 100
Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 29/09/2026I'd like to get a bunch of old 35mm slides. Tourist pics, family, landscapes, whatever. They sell lots on eBay, but I'm wondering about quality for price. Anyone have experience with this? 110

Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 28/09/2026And the business of social media works with the channel surfing model, just serve ads. But getting people to pay for expensive AI subscriptions so they can run agents is a different thing. 020
Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 28/09/2026It may be that the AI companies are selling the idea that everyone can make and command "agents," even though a very small number of people will end up doing that. For social media this imbalance worked ok. Maybe on 10% of people post on Instagram, but the other 90% are pretty happy to just watch. 110
Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 28/09/2026This is true. It reminds of how the original promise of social media was that anyone could post, anyone could have a voice. But for most people the experience of social media is more like channel surfing, passive consumption rather than active creation. 151

Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 25/09/2026Next month I’m giving a talk on art and AI. It’s being promoted on Instagram and there are a bunch of people in the comments who want assurance that the talk will be TOTALLY ANTI-AI, or they’re going to be BIG MAD. 040

Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 23/09/2026Not only did I not use AI to design my slides, I decided to also eschew Powerpoint templates in favor of hand drawing my slides with a sharpie and then taking photos of the papers. 140
Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 23/09/2026I had such a fun time speaking at CreativeMornings GR last week. I talked about lasagna, overhead projectors, pennies, and river surfing. You had to be there. Thanks Brianna Kilgore for these wonderful photos. 150

Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 22/09/2026I know the nuclear or germ warfare scenarios are possible, but I think a completely poisoned internet is much more likely. 000
Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 22/09/2026I know they mean what they say. I think they have a particular brand of biased thinking where they're unable to differentiate between ending the internet and ending humanity. The transition would be rough, but I actually think humanity could do pretty well without the internet. 100
Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 22/09/2026Don't get me wrong, taking the whole internet offline permanently would kill people and create a massive economic disruption worse than we've ever seen. But people survive without the internet now, and I think we could rebuild communication and economic systems without it. 100
Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 22/09/2026I can see how AI would make the internet completely unusable, but eliminating all human life seems way less likely. The good news is that humanity does not need the internet to survive. We didn't have for most of the time we've been here. 100
Kevin Buist @kevinbuist.com · 22/09/2026I think the AI doomers (and promoters??) need to stop saying AI could destroy humanity. I think what they mean is that AI could destroy the internet, which is not the same thing. 320
