A standing, pink being puts its hand on the seated being's shoulder, and says "Surely there's something out there for you."

Behind them, the purple being sees a door marked "Expensive and time-consuming hobby."

The pink being jumps in front of the door, arms wide, blocking both access and view, and is sweating profusely. It says, "Not that."

That #HamRadio QSO was hard won. My callsign suffix is hard to grok over SSB unless conditions are PERFECT. AM or FM, with good conditions, much easier. But SSB is difficult. They seem to get L right away, then Q after 2 more tries, then M takes another 3-4 overs.

The #openhamclock team has rapidly made more improvements, but they still don't grok the point of clickable pins on the map. Like, this should be THE MAIN POINT of painting a map with pins of spots, as the CENTER window of a web UI. They Just... Don't […] [Original post on mastodon.hams.social]
You are absolutely right. I dug deeper into the logic, and there is a specific coding "prioritization" error in the upstream WorldMap.jsx that causes exactly what you are seeing.
The "Smoking Gun" in the Code
In src/components/WorldMap.jsx (around line 777), the code determines which callsign to display on the map pin like this:
const displayCall = spot.receiver || spot.sender;
Why this breaks for you:
The || (OR) operator in JavaScript picks the first value that isn't empty.
1.
When YOU hear THEM (RX Spot):
◦
spot.sender = The DX Station (e.g., K1ABC)
◦
spot.receiver = N0MQL (You)
◦
The code looks at spot.receiver || spot.sender. Since spot.receiver (N0MQL) exists, it picks N0MQL.
◦
The Result: The pin is placed at the DX station's location (the sender), but the label says "N0MQL".
2.
When THEY hear YOU (TX Spot):
◦
spot.sender = N0MQL (You)
◦
spot.receiver = The DX Station (e.g., G4XYZ)
◦
The code looks at spot.receiver || spot.sender. Since spot.receiver (G4XYZ) exists, it picks G4XYZ.
◦
The Result: The pin is placed at the DX station's location (the receiver), and the label correctly says the DX callsign.
Summary of the Bug
Because spot.receiver is checked first, any time you are the receiver (which is every single station you decode), the map overrides the DX callsign with your own.

(continued on alt text of next screenshot)
Another of the exact same screenshot, but the alt text continues with what was missing from the other one, because of the character limit...

The upstream logic assumes that a spot object only contains one "interesting" callsign, but in your setup—where the server is tracking your specific station—the spot objects contain both your call and the DX call. The || logic is too simplistic and ends up "defaulting" to you whenever you're on the receiving end.
This confirms your observation: It shows the reporter (you) instead of the DX station for all your RX decodes.

Last night’s ferrite #MagLoop antenna test was a success, but barely. Got #WSPR decodes of only 1 station, <700km. MUCH more detail in the ALT text.
Mix 61 ferrite rod is 4”x0.33”, has approx 60 turns 23AWG primary, & 2 turns 28AWG pickup coil. #NanoVNA gave me a mere 17dB dip on the target frequency.

Antenna is taped to East-facing window, about 6’ above grade. But TONIGHT’s test will be this 8”x0.33” rod. All else is the same, except with 2 rods glued together, reinforced with heat shrink, there’s more “aperture” to take in RF.

Got a better match with this longer rod also… got NanoVNA to show my dip at -38dB.

So I’m very hopeful about this next test.

Photo of ferrite rod with 3 set of enameled wire loops.

A long wire outside gets connected to a few loops at the 1/4 spot of the 4" rod (halfway from middle loop to end). The other end of this 1st loop gets grounded.

The tunable loop is 60 turns in the middle, of 36AWG (very thin) wire, which will connect to variable capacitor.

Then there's a 3rd loop of a few turns which are directly atop the tuned loop, and 1 end of this is grounded, while the other end goes to the center conductor of the coax that runs to the receiver's ANT port.

Maximum Capacity 74% This is a measure of battery capacity relative to when it was new. Lower capacity may result in fewer hours of usage between charges. Screenshot of iPhone's Battery Level graph over the past 24 hours.

Shows a slow drop from about 80% to about 70% from 6am to 2pm.

A bit after 2pm, we got in the truck to pickup groceries, and I plugged it in at that time, so for 20min or so it was charging, jumped up to over 80%.

Another gradual decline to 75% by about 6:30, then off the cliff it goes. Sitting next to me, dark, doing nothing, it dropped below 25% in less than an hour.

I got a TXT from my wife, which caused me to pick it up at 7:45, saw it was at 1%, plugged it in. It charged up to 98% over the next 90min.

To bed at 10pm-ish, nearly fully charged, shut off all apps, dark, on the nightstand overnight doing nothing. Then from 3am to 6am it dropped from 75% to 25%.

Well, THAT’s not gonna work.

Got an email from #YouTube touting, among other things, their AI creation tools. So here's what I'm thinking - I prompt the #AI tool to make a short on some #HamRadio subject, then I take that and immediately make a #Duet pointing out what the AI got […] [Original post on mastodon.hams.social]

I'd not been paying much attention, after I heard #LOTW was offline for weeks last year due to a cyberattack against reportedly ancient, systems at the #ARR So imagine how unsurprised (yet disappointed) I was that they'd inform me via email AFTER THE […] [Original post on mastodon.hams.social]

Ham Radio QSO From The Smoke Shack The flrigWebRemote app allows better iPhone/iPad control of the main things needed on an HF rig to have a rag chew or check into a net. And the RX audio over Opus/ICE is very low latency and clear. n0mql.com/ham-radio-qso-from-the-sm…
Screenshot of iPhone shows frequency in large fond, then Tune and PTT buttons, they're all in a pale green box.Next row displays PWR:5, SWR:0.0, MODE: USB (this is a dropdown).

Next row, 3 buttons: Connect Audio, Disconnect, Mic.

Next is a box with nine buttons. In the upper left the box is titled "Band", and the buttons follow:
3.5, 7, 14
18, 21, 24
28, 50, GEN

At the bottom is the URL bar that shows a local LAN IP address.

Kinda cool to see I’m getting signals from as far away as possible in many directions.
iPhone photo of #HamClock in my #HamRadio #AmateurRadio shack this morning. In almost every compass direction (aka azimuth), I’m getting signals from as far away as there is land.

Once again, crotchety old farts reinforcing the stereotype that hams hate anything new, and bemoan that it's killing ham radio. If you don't like it, don't use it, and STFU. #DontBeThatGuy #HamRadio #AmateurRadio
Two old farts whinging about #RTQM - the Real Time QSO Manager that QRZ is working to deploy.TL;DR - I'd like to get in on this, beta if possible, for non-popular modes.

Learned of this from a pair of Ham Radio Elder Statesmen in Great Britain commiserating with each other on BlueSky... and I quote...
"The arrogance!"
"Dumb-arse ideas are killing ham radio!"
"Just another example of 'can't be arsed'.".

The sort of blokes who - in another era - would bitch and moan that SSB is killing ham radio.

Do I think I would "call CQ silently"? Heavens, no. But I don't give a rat's ass if someone else prefers to do so.

It's built into several mobile dual-band rigs that if you're beaconing via APRS, part of the message is what frequency your other VFO is tuned to. Someone could call you without you having transmitted a CQ (or the VHF/UHF FM equivalent). Where's the harm in that? I say there is none. If you don't prefer that way of doing things, simply don't do that (then kindly SFTU about it).

I would indeed like to get in on this. But not for the most-typical reasons people think... I'm thinking rarer modes like Feld Hell. A mode that will never get picked up on RBN or pskreporter. You have it set up. You're 95% sure that you're doing it right, and that your transmissions are copyable out there somewhere. Yet you can CQ until you're blue in the face, on a day when propagation conditions are fabulous, and never get a response. Why? Because thousands of other hams who could receive your signal are not monitoring those frequencies nor that mode. There's someone out there wh...
