in case anyone wonders how they fake the appearance of a mind — by faking the sensation of conversation — i wrote a whole thread about it tl;dr NONE of that is in the actual model, 100% of it is in the software between you and the model. it’s the curtain that hides the fake wizard

you don’t hold "AI" accountable; you hold AI developers, vendors, and corporations that profit off it accountable holding "AI accountable" is like holding a toaster accountable. it's an inanimate object. it doesn't have wishes, feelings, or desires

Manually edited version of an infamous Twitter post from @BravoCoolee, with text as follows: "[Bluesky] the only place where well articulated sentences still get misinterpreted. You can say "I like pancakes" and somebody will say "so you hate waffles?" No bitch. Dats a whole new sentence. Wtf is you talkin about."

No 😭 The "Enable Copilot" checkbox in Options apparently doesn't exist for work accounts or in the web version 🫠

Been using Office daily for decades. Last week I dug through the entire Options menu trying to disable Copilot. Found out you can now tell Excel NOT to automatically remove leading zeros when opening CSVs. This is the only new feature I've ever been excited about, and it took me years to notice it 😅

I'm a white collar worker, and no, it's not good at any of those tasks, because all of them require *accuracy* for the result to be worth anything. GenAI cannot provide an *accurate* report or an *accurate* analysis of Q2 revenue. All it can do is spit out words that *sound* plausible.

Hm, are you somewhere other than the U.S. by chance? I've probably had at least 20 in-person job interviews here over the course of my career, and I can't remember being offered tea or coffee at a single one (across education, tech, healthcare, and a few other industries).

Why yes, I did spend years strengthening my hand and specifically training it to hold a big knife and stab with it effectively, but I don't see how that's relevant here.

This is such a great thread because it tells you instantly how to answer the supposedly intractable regulation problem: liability, potentially joint liability, for the person who set up the AI system.

What's wrong is that too many Democrats at the federal level are willing to throw literally any of those things out the window the moment enough corporate money is on the table 🤷 which means that the *actual* party line is "we do what our corporate donors want"

Dems: It’s always stronger to stand up for your beliefs than to modulate to appease an audience. People like strong in politics. Even if they disagree with you, they’ll respect you more for being forthright. The best approach is to acknowledge areas of disagreement and pivot to areas of overlap.

Every half-ass plan for our extinction that they provide just turns me on. No internet, you say? No online banking?? No 2FA to use the bathroom at my job??? Baby I was a latchkey kid in the 1980s. You’re describing my platonic ideal. Extinct me.

3 things about Dem politicians who dabble in transphobia: 1. It's wrong, they're wrong, on a moral basis they're being evil 2. It's stupid, they're stupid, they'll never get any credit from the fascists for it 3. It's proof you're not capable of reading or rising to this, and therefore any, moment

- no one said you did 😅 - comparing tax burden versus donations is a valid assessment - I find little value in comparing "better than nothing" to "far worse than nothing"; I'd like to see fewer people putting the wealthy on pedestals in general - re: "fanatics" - 🤨 ??? ... you ok over there?

Yes, it's always bothered me that the accepted term for that particular category of crimes against humanity just kind of runs with the implication that the targeted ethnicities are dirty/diseased. As you pointed out, we gotta stop letting the bad actors decide how we refer to things!

I've often heard that the far right has maintained traction in the U.S. largely because there's never been any reckoning with the Confederacy & slavery -- as compared to Germany's extensive public reckoning with Nazism & the Holocaust, which was supposed to be protective. Apparently not 😕

When Trump is finally defeated, remember that the hangers-on and the ghouls surrounding him, the JD Vances of the world, will all claim that they were trying to moderate his evil and they should be thanked. And we need to remember that this is a lie. They were willing to do anything for power.

Also, lol @ extremely visible data entry errors 😅
Screenshot of the section of the banned books list starting with the letter "T". Between two actual book titles, "Tell Me in Secret" and "Thin Girls", there's an entry that is clearly just the middle of a sentence meant to explain how the list works. The word "with" is listed as an author, and the sentence extends into a data tag labeled "BEING THE MOST SEXUALLY" in all caps.

Most Democrats today have little conception or memory of how bold the party was before Reagan. I give you the 1972 Democratic Party platform’s full-throated endorsement of federally administered, nationalized healthcare. The party dropped that, pivoting to “universal” coverage—without the teeth.
Establish a system of universal National Health Insurance which covers all Americans with a comprehensive set of benefits including preventive medicine, mental and emotional disorders, and complete protection against catastrophic costs, and in which the rule of free choice for both provider and consumer is protected. The program should be federally-financed and federally-administered.

These gloves don't cause neuromuscular incapacitation the way that a taser does. In fact, they only work when applied directly to bare skin. These aren't made for apprehending anyone. These have one and only one use: causing extreme pain to already-restrained captives. In plain language: torture.
