‘Nairn Across Britain’ is still on iPlayer - and IMHO is fabulous television. Meades, Lambton & Cruikshank have already been mentioned by respondents. I’d quite like to see Dan C make a show on the Tyne bridges (his bridge book has a chapter on them, as well as London’s.)

(5) We welcomed folk from near & far to #ThePinesGarden; wakes, weddings, management awaydays, yoga, exploring our labyrinth, drawing, birdwatching, cake in our cafe etc. We’ve a #geopark #geosite too… Might we see you? @thebaytrust.bsky.social #PinesCalyx kentdowns.org.uk/activities/t...

Much of my working summer has been spent preparing several funding bids, set for autumn submission. Here’s a thread on a few further +ve @thebaytrust.bsky.social engagements alongside that activity…

My copy arrived and it’s a joy to read. Additionally, the photo of #Forthbank by @alanmccredie.bsky.social brought to mind Hans van der Meer’s ‘Moment of Tension’ and also made the stadium look both fantastic & beautifully set. The #Clarilawmuir story is great / lovingly told too :-)

I think that’s a nice / happily personal way to engage with a book. On another front, it was interesting to note more than 60 stations (discounting replacements); if the tram extensions of Granton/Bioquarter and South Sub happen there will still be fewer stops on the whole system than that!

A nice article to read. I can certainly attest to having enjoyed cycling the Monsal, Mawddach and Crab & Winkle trails. The Dava Way, Flitch Trail and Strawberry Line all appear tempting.

I used to work (as a grants manager) with a few excellent cider makers in Somerset and there was a genuine split between those going for single variety (e.g. Dabinett, Kingston Black etc.) or a mix of apples.

I work for an environmental education charity that is involved in various agendas the event appears to have covered and had no idea it was taking place. That’s probably an error on my part, but it might have been a good networking opportunity for me!

I do like those shelters. Walked to Deal yesterday, oddly enough (coastal path from Dover - the French coast was almost in silhouette and there were good/clear sightings of the Goodwin Sands too), but didn’t quite get up to the shelters… simply down to train times!

A fine article. I’ve experienced what you described at Mam Tor on Malham Cove and the White Cliffs (nr. Dover.) I agree on groups like Muslim Hikers being of similar praiseworthiness to the Kinder Trespassers also. The dilemmas faced by the YHA are too common in the “outdoors” charity sector, sadly.

Fascinating watch. It was made shortly before I became a planning student and that question on whether an electronic public loo was the best the private sector could do (in terms of common space) crystallised the topic of debates and essay questions I certainly recall from the turn of the 90s.

I recall a student field trip to the Isle of Dogs (this is going to date me!) where we were taken around by quite informative staff from Tower Hamlets BC, but the LDDC couldn’t supply anyone to meet with us. Cascades was very new; One Canada Square wasn’t complete.

This really is a good article by @guyshrubsole.bsky.social. As someone working for a charity that owns land (thanks to actions of a philanthropist) it’s the “sense of belonging” / Norman MacCaig quote section that provokes thought and inspires most.

Have you read ‘Brilliant Orange’ by @dwinnera.bsky.social? There’s a fabulous chapter about Wim van Hanegem asking his dog for a casting vote on whether to transfer from #Feyenoord to #OlympiquedeMarseille, or not!

This has made me wonder if anyone has run a #BlueSky monthly book challenge, on sport books, akin to the types of musical ones @tansleyjames.bsky.social used to enable (he promoted a #PrefabSprout track in one run by someone else yesterday!) Good for inspiring new discoveries.

The coda of this, where the (synclavier?) cellos take the main riff into a very different sounding chord structure, is fantastic and - I think - far too brief. The only downside is that it isn’t followed immediately by ‘Tour de France’ (in either ‘83 or ‘84 Kraftwerk mix version.)

Horses: Uffington & Hackpen Giants: Wilmington, Cerne Abbas and the possibility of Gog and Magog at Wandlebury. Hackpen and the Long Man were down to me. I also suggested an imaginary stylised horse (north of Mere) in a workshop exercise, but maybe that’s too much info!

As an end of the working week post, I’m happy to add that whilst much of this event was around nature restoration, a few hill figures were mentioned (and not just by me) - a couple of horses & four giants! Quite a @ravilious1942.bsky.social, @hedleythorne.bsky.social & @jonwoolcott.bsky.social vibe!

The most enjoyable railway book I’ve read since ‘Parallel Lines’ by @mrmarchant.bsky.social (RIP.) Also includes @birmingham81.bsky.social in the credits; on another platform he came up with #GrumpyWinnie as a hashtag, to describe (splendidly) a statue my day job involves. Small world etc. :-)

Was fortunate to attend #RHSChelsea today and impressed, as we produce and use it at @thebaytrust.bsky.social #PinesGarden, that #biochar is also an “ingredient” in the @asthmaandlung.org.uk Breathing Space garden (which will be relocating to #Rotherham in due course.) One show highlight for me.

It is a thing of beauty. I bought the LP on its day of release - the first New Order record I purchased with such timing. The tracing paper part of the packaging (still intact), with song titles trickling down the back, seemed impressively “thought through.” Fine suite of recordings inside too!

Really good to be at #WordsChangeThings (organised by @danthompson33.bsky.social) today. Got to talk about @thebaytrust.bsky.social #PinesCalyx, praise the #restoringnature aspect of @nationaltrust.org.uk 2035 strategy & show off @sulkrooms.bsky.social ‘Rewilding’ CD, among other things :-)
Margate Harbour Arm on a sunny day: Lightly rippling dark blue estuary waters, peppered with numerous bathing seagulls, form the bottom third of the image. From right to mid left, almost making a horizon, is a stone harbour wall with small colourful boats in front and a series of brightly coloured sheds on top of the wall. At the left end of the harbour wall rises a slender lighthouse. The sky beyond & above is various shades of blue. Words Change Things Festival chalkboard: A wooden a-framed chalkboard forms the bulk of the image. It is set on a largely tarmaced pavement with weeds growing at the non-roadside kerb. A set of stone steps rises behind the board, to buildings on the left. The chalkboard advertises delights of the festival venue: Thursday 7pm John Grindrod. Friday Secret Postcard Auction 11am - 8.30pm. Writer’s Space 9.30am - 1pm. Lunch 1-2pm. First Friday 6-8.30pm. MORE SATURDAY!

Encouraging to see this at @nationaltrust.org.uk #Sissinghurst yesterday - not a million miles from our #hugelkultur beds at @thebaytrust.bsky.social #PinesGarden. Tomorrow I’m meeting local NT staff on ways we can help each other further - and their 2035 Strategy sets a very positive context :-)
Small blackboard with white, handwritten, chalk text stating “Don’t miss a visit to our NO DIG, ORGANIC vegetable garden! Your feedback is most welcome!” The board sits, upright, on a slatted wooden pallet. Small, green-leafed, plants - in grey plant pots - site to either side. One is of lemon balm, according to a printed sign placed in its soil.
