People really underestimate just how important it was that PlayStation emerged out of Sony *Music*. A publishing label, not a hardware division, a conscious political decision by Norio Ohga. A diverse portfolio in music was a safe one, and so it was with their third-party outreach in games, too.

a lot of people don't realize that a lot of those digital sales are "catalog units" (games sold before the current fiscal quarter/year) a few headlines pointed to capcom mentioning they sell over 90% of units digitally, but they didn't read the IR report itself that mentions >80% catalog units

I think we've reached the point where AAA games have so little faith in the player that they can't even make the player feel cool anymore. There's a difference between taking you hunting and guiding a buck into their view vs. taking you on a canned hunt where they shove a domesticated deer out.

I've talked about this before, but it was truly fascinating to watch used prices for DD2 crater in Japan in real time quite soon after release, which usually only happens if local critical reception is super sour. Nowadays, it's not uncommon to find copies for like 1000 yen, which is mind-boggling.

But now gacha games constitute such a large portion of players' consumption, most any nominally mainstream game is bound to attract people who carry those expectations, fairly or not. Given that DD2's price and user scores have never recovered, I'm skeptical how well this outreach has really worked.

I think it's extremely relevant, yeah. When the first DD originally launched in 2012, gacha games obviously existed back then and were already popular, but had yet to reach *quite* this level of ubiquity and wider influence on the Japanese industry in terms of gameplay and UI design decision.

They never get fixed now. Sony let both Spider-Man 2 and Miles Morales sit as-is when both have extremely common, full scale 'the game is breaking' bugs. I have friends stream Miles Morales six years after it comes out and they clip through the floor in the final boss, exactly like I did at launch

*I think a lot of retrospective looks at the N64 fail to account for how important it being the only 4 player console in town was bc people getting 3 friends in a room for couch co-op might as well be impossible these days
