- Smart and earnest shit to say about how monstrosity can help you (literally) see yourself situated differently in society and its rituals; life-saving shit. - Wholehearted defense of loving and locating yourself in "bad trans objects," so important to me. - Matte paintings! - Dipping sauces!

CAMP MIASMA: one of my favorite films of all time after one viewing. I felt so nervous 30 minutes in, not about the fate of the characters, but about whether the whole thing would sputter or derail. I almost always leave art thinking of what I would have done differently, but genuinely: no notes.

Still practicing my "furry art." Here's some inspiration for all the fellow cuties who find themselves Athwart the Demiurge: (cw: painted blood)
The image depicts an anthropomorphic cat in armor; she's yelling while holding a greatsword. There's rain and lightning and she's drenched in blood and it's all very dramatic.

Concretely, that means I have a book with an agent and am making sure every page of it is soaked in my blood; hopefully that will be out in the world soon. I maybe want to start up a Clowes-ish one-woman comics anthology. I maybe want to make the Baldur's Gate III of 2D Indie Furry RPGs. Stay tuned?

I've been putting some thought into what to do next (besides get on unemployment). I think I have to give up this idea of "stability" and go back to the rancid waters that birthed me: writing, making comics, making indie RPGs. Abstractly, I need to become The Black Paladin of the Three-Form Goddess.

Checking in, tho I never use this thing. I know you all heard about the demise of Hampshire College two months ago, but maybe you didn't know that was where I worked. I've been really heartbroken over it all; I loved my students and don't think I can ever be happy teaching anywhere else after that.

I got a sketchbook a week or so ago with the intention of drawing in it quickly, without much planning, without caring about the result. I've never done that before! Anyway, here's today's page, which @ohtiniestplanet.bsky.social said I must post.

I'm always telling @ohtiniestplanet.bsky.social we need to collab on a comic about queer art students in 1990s Boston. The other day she showed me a pic of legendary bar RATHSKELLAR circa 1992, so I drew this one page as a sort of "proof of concept":

For reasons too complex to explain here, I wrote an Apple II program designed for Early Modern Age Catholics to determine if they're allowed to have sex with their wife, or if it'd be a sin. Here's the video of it running.

I agree with your takes on the first movie and said a lot of the same things about it re: scrubbing out the race component, though in the end I think I came down on it as being "pretty good but flawed." But Chapter 2 was one of the worst films I've ever seen. Literally exhausting to sit through.

I have a weird love for it even though (or maybe because) it taught me a harsh lesson about save slots as a teenager and made me have to restart the game, lol. I can be kind of masochistic about these things though, I watch the wheel of pain scene in Conan like ":D I want to try!"

In about three years the entire university pivot to AI curricula and schools and programs is going to be so deeply embarrassing. We will all pretend it never happened and I will be standing there, looking at people with a mirror in my eyes. This is all so embarrassing.

The thing he did that impressed me most was completely changing the theme of Haunting of Hill House, making it pro-family instead of entirely about a queer terror of heteronormative domestic duty, and still having me think the show turned out "pretty good." Like, I should totally hate that.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. I have to imagine his following comes more from just being like a "he reliably won't totally fuck this up or anything"-tier creator than from being someone making great work? Because yeah, otherwise, I don't know either.

I don't dislike him but the endless monologues get WILD at a certain point, like damn near self-parody. That was especially the case in Midnight Mass, I thought.

Taught my class about Donald Duck and the burning pentagram today.
In the background, a classroom. In the foreground, a laptop featuring Donald Duck's face with a pentagram emerging from his third eye. A still from the 1960s animated short, "Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land."

Just rereading The Symposium and was reminded of the wonderful fact, which I had forgot, that even the ancient Greeks had drama in their fanfic communities about who would top and who would bottom. All men are brothers, human nature is eternal.
‘Achilles, the son of Thetis, however, they honoured and sent to the
Isles of the Blest.48 For when he found out from his mother that if he
killed Hector he too would die, but if he did not kill him he would
return home and live to old age, he nevertheless dared to make the
choice of standing up for his lover Patroclus49 and avenging him; thus
180a he also died, and died for his sake. (Aeschylus actually talks nonsense
when he asserts that it was Achilles who was the lover of Patroclus:
Achilles was not only more beautiful than Patroclus but also more

44 philia; see philein. 45 eros. 46 psuche. 47 arete.
48 In Greek myth, islands in the legendary far west of the Greek world where after death specially
favoured mortals, notably some of the heroes, pass a blissful afterlife, rather than having a
phantom existence in the Underworld like everyone else.
49 Homer in the Iliad did not make Achilles and Patroclus lovers, but Aeschylus represents them
as such in Myrmidons, a lost tragedy from which a few quotations survive.

Secondly, pre-stocked signifiers like "hetero couple" or "the family" aren't meaningful on their own. You can't expect readers to value those things just because. You have to put in the work to make them real and specific. Way too many widely-lauded works fail to do this.

Caoimhe Harlock, Heresiarch of Charybdis @keeva.bsky.social · 15/10/2025
A lot of stories read as if the writer has lost the distinction between subtlety and cowardice and is afraid that writing actual scenes will make them seem artless or ideological. It is okay to believe things and have characters respond to the world in ways other than befogged helpless dissociation.

Have you seen that CNN video where the live bombing of Kyiv is disrupted by an ad for Applebee's blaring "Chicken Fried" at peak volume? I played it for a class to show them "this is the kind of discordant weirdness you should stock your brain with as a writer." They all said it was "very American."
