It's friday, the day when i scour the internet to find out if there are any updates on the release of Shorsey Season 5. Treat to self. Disappointment.

Bless you, citizen of Winnemucca, who filed the sole "Did You Feel It" response to the earthquake of 2 hrs ago
Screen grab of the USGS "Did You Feel It" page for a magnitude 3.8 earthquake that occurred on 8/27/2025 at 02:17:48 (UTC). The page shows that one person in Winnemucca completed the "Did You Feel It" survey and contributed to the USGS shake map.

Sorry for never evver posting here, but does anyone know where to find a cartoon depicting continents breaking through oceanic crust like an icebreaker? I believe I have seen one that dates from an argument against continental drift but i cannot seem to locate this on the entire internet

The preservation of open space and public lands for future generations is among the most fundamental promises of America and is the very purpose of having a government: to protect for all what would be destroyed by short term profit-seeking, so we all may enjoy the much greater long-term benefits.

haven't read the paper yet but the title is certainly refreshing: The 2021 Mw 5.6 Earthquake in the Guyana Shield, South America: An Intraplate Event with No Reason to Occur Marcelo Assumpção et al. out this week in The Seismic Record

if anyone happens to read a truly terrible article in a famously factually-challenged UK news rag today that relates to earthquakes in Nevada, please ignore it. The headline is wackadoodle and the article makes no sense. People behind this kind of drivel should be ashamed of themselves.

Perhaps leaving scholarly communication in the hands of researchers would be a better use of research funds

just because some great scientists volunteer for journals run by particular publishers, does not mean YOU should volunteer too -- your time and expertise are too valuable to throw away to for-profit publishers. Support society journals and volunteer where benefits stay in the research community!
screen grab of an email which reads "Thanks for the invitation but I don't work with MDPI due to its involvement with predatory publishing practices and general harm done to the research community by this business model. The invitation to edit an issue only peripherally related to my expertise reinforces my impression of the lack of meaningful scientific oversight at this publishing house. "

Interested in doing a MS studying faults at the University of Alaska Anchorage? I am looking for a student to work on a paleoseismic study of the Castle Mountain fault. We will use geomorphology, geophysical surveys, and sediment cores to understand kinematics and earthquake history.

Feel that? Nevada is one of the most seismically active states in the nation
Almost two weeks ago, a moderate earthquake centered around Yerington, shook that small town and Reno, which is about 70 miles northwest.

SPOILER ALERT: Went out to collect perishable data around yesterday's M5.8 epicentral region. Preliminary results: Nobody feels aftershocks when @faultcreeper.bsky.social is driving. Afternoon frozen slushy river makes for extremely cool co-seismic features (new types? to document!). 1/2

Note to self: putting more things on the to do list doesn't mean more things are going to get done. Pick one or two things to work on and leave the rest for the next opportunity so you don't get overwhelmed

Giant slinkies are an excellent investment by the way. Unsurprisingly the P-wave seems to dissipate faster than the S-wave due to friction on the floor... needs to be explained in order to not undermine the velocity contrast

Not sure how i got so many new followers but it's probably people who like rocks, so here are some plants that also like rocks and even look a bit like rocks.
Plastic nursery pot containing about 20 lithops less than 1 cm across, these are beige, gray and pink plants shaped like tiny butts. They are planted in 1-2mm decomposed granite. Sulcorebutia rauschii, a purplish cactus that looks a bit like an upside-down pine cone with nested scales. The cactus is about 4 cm tall and barrel-shaped with a few small pups (baby cacti) around the base. It is planted in coarse gravel and bark chips in a 4" plastic pot.

Is there a USA substitute for a big carton of timbits for meetings? somehow the donut hole options just aren't as varied, do Americans (dunkin regions excepted) just not buy donut holes? A whole donut is too much for a meeting snack

Things I love about working at @weareseismica.bsky.social : - an editor suggested a tweak to the scope to be more inclusive; we fixed it. - Our Standards & CopyEd team have emerged as a really critical part of author experience that differentiates us; we make this more visible. 1/2
