I just need to reiterate that my favorite food in the whole wide world is my mom’s fried rice. No other fried rice compares.

This is such a powerful articulation of universalism that resonates powerfully for me. The mystery of God is soooo much greater than a cut-and-dried, “if a person doesn’t say they believe in one particular way they go to hell”.

Accidentally pressed 4 instead the elevator instead of L but then someone got on at the 4th floor anyway so it was gonna stop and didn’t seem like an accident. Success face.

I'm most torn by this because I did ministry heavily reliant on translation apps for over a year, then embarked on serious language study. The former FUNCTIONED, in many ways. But the latter is better for human flourishing. I foresee this conflict appearing in many, many arenas in the coming years.

fascinating that a white guy can straight up admit to possibly committing a heinous violent crime and be given benefit of the doubt, while immigrants are being rounded up for like, jaywalking or something.

"You know why I'm furious right now? I was hearing from everybody on plaintiffs' side that this was going to happen and I said repeatedly, no, I trust the government. I trusted you all not to do precisely what you have done."

Just sang the Ronald Arnatt setting (S-260 in the Hymnal 1982) and if you don't know it and like this translation, it's worth a listen. (unfortunately the only recording I've seen online is a covid-era one with all the compromises that implies, but you can get the gist of it). Really lovely!

*hugs* This is such a hard spot :( I won't say "it's all for a purpose" because honestly who knows, but I will say that every step forward is itself the journey, and I pray that journey leads eventually to rewards that you might not see just yet.

Correct! I’m very very privileged to be old money enough to have some opportunity to inherit property (eventually) but I sure as heck wasn’t going to actually *buy* any of it. That stopped being feasible in the 70s.

Relatedly, social stratification makes this worse. I’m a privacy transit user so I experience a lot of this - I’m also a chronically ill Asian female and in no position to put myself into harm’s way if someone gets mad at me. But where are the more privileged folks? Not on public transit!

Definitely. And also because even if they know you’re doing it, it doesn’t feel like a “job” with a “deliverable”. Someone feeling truly heard and empathized with is a good outcome but a largely invisible one, often even the person themself not realizing it!

every time i see someone being like "why is it okay to just blast your music on the train?" i'm like well i know why ppl are afraid to do it, but part of the reason is definitely that we are no longer in a society where the median person is willing to say "turn that shit down asshole"

The amount that growing up in Hawaiʻi GENUINELY did not prepare me for what voter suppression looks like elsewhere. Same day reg, universal mail ballot, reg at 16, robust protections…I can’t believe it isn’t like that everywhere!

Oh, I feel that. In my brain, it’s similar to being a pastoral presence when someone needs someone to talk to, etc., where my role is to be the receptacle for the thing they need to offload, and compassionately hold that. And so the labor of the purge is just like the emotional labor of processing

Although I’ll say that I have generally not been asked about items after the fact, but I’m okay saying “I appreciated that so much! It’s being loved by someone else now” or whatever applies.

The act of giving is the gift. The continuance of the thing forever is not necessarily the gift. If it’s not actively in use (including as decoration, but only intentional decoration and not obligation-decoration), then once it has been given and appreciated, its purpose has been served.

I have a policy where I accumulate “things” in a contained way (cards get pinned up on the bulletin board, items maybe get displayed for a bit on a desk or table) and when it gets full, I thank the things, recall the memory one last time, and reverently dispose (give away if possible).

I’ll also say I was very impressed by the three bishops in Tennessee for their shared and public condemnation of the other attempted execution. (Also in general the three bishops of Tennessee give me great joy, they’re all so different and yet SO visibly collegial in a beautiful way.)

and nobody expects a random layperson with no advanced training to write a sermon. What’s wild to me is why someone who allegedly *has* the training would choose not to use it. If you can make a restaurant-quality meal from scratch, why make the boxed Mac?

Like I think this is something that gets missed in AI discussions sometimes, but is really obvious: you should not just naturally be able to do professional skills you’ve never trained in? Nobody expects me to cater a 6 course professional dinner just bc I can make boxed Mac n cheese,

In all seriousness, I had a convo w a parishioner where they said “well if I had to preach tomorrow I’d have to use AI because I don’t know anything about writing sermons” and I was like “yes that’s why I went to seminary”

TEC holds a Pandora’s box with all of the ingredients for christian nationalism except the willpower to keep it closed. How hard are we trying to dispose of the box before any more of it leaks out?

I waffle around this. On the one hand, totally. On the other hand, “lighter” forms of white supremacist, colonial Christianity that led to CN are also present in the white mainline and need to be addressed as present issues and not just someone else’s problem.

Yeah that’s a tricky thing and probably will relate to what ministry looks like with this church over the next couple years. I suspect I’ll figure out pretty quickly if it’s a “forever home” or not.

Oh I get it, part of the financial help I’m alluding to is also inheritance related. It’s just a reality of the situation! I both recognize my extreme privilege of having that support AND recognize that it’s an unsustainable market without that. But also sorry about your dad <3

When it doesn’t). As far as the mortgage situation, I might have an easier time. This is really not a humblebrag but I have some extended family of means who might be able to help with some private loans or mitigating some other costs, so I don’t think we are in as much danger there.
