It is sad to see Canada go this way. Even if there's some spitefulness there, they have a perfectly good strategic reason for looking to band closer together with countries that are not actively threatening their sovereignty and using current trade relationships to bully them.

Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1

(1/5) Pentagon leadership has said that by the end of this month, Palantir's Maven artificial intelligence system will become a line item with stable, long-term funding in the defense budget (a "program of record"). #News #Palantir #AI

Maybe Mitch is actually able to indicate his wishes. But it sure looks abusive. In my view, after a month of absence he should have been automatically replaced.

Survival across regimes suggest a degree of gamesmanship. The inferred fact that the super rich like the Wallenberg's are facile at cooperating with different powers suggests some moral flexibility. Also, intelligence, in the spy sense, would also be useful in dodging obstacles to continued success.

Maybe they are basically a well organized family who have made smart investments that complement each other. They were wise in not simply handing business control to family members without some evidence of competence. Being diversified made them robust and allowed for integrated capacities. 2/2

Having now watched this video about the Wallenberg family, I am impressed that they expanded their reach over 170 years in banking, telecom, medicine, manufacturing. Were they unscrupulous manipulators and profiteers? They helped bankroll the Nazis. But... 1/2

It would be great if our society was filled with people like this high school robotics team: constantly looking to help people solve their problems. As we take less responsibility for our fellows, we look to the government as the cure all.

I wonder if Don Jr was really happy about accepting the "gift". Even if not, once you get involved with such people, it may be more dangerous to reject the offer. But, I tend to think this is a further unveiling of the relationship with Russian power that goes back decades.

My belief is the powerful attempt to control outcomes, but the world is by nature chaotic and humans individually and in groups defy control. The information problem faced by a "manager" of society is probably impossible to model. 2/2

I only sampled the first 30 seconds of this. Sharing in order to save it for later. It is worth considering evidence of hidden hands, even though I mostly subscribe to an invisible hand worldview. 1/2

The AI companies *could* slow down and be more careful about how much scope the give to their AI agents. Designing more secure run-time environments inside of hardened networks, and strictly monitoring what actions agents take, requires more time and attention.

"allegedly like more than the other 8 billion". "allegedly": in one word, Sexton casts the whole marriage as a testable proposition: Do you know the truth of your relationship or are you lying to yourself (and your partner) about how you really feel?

And then she shot a goat... just to get the rage out of her system. And then she self-reported this madness in her book. Somehow this didn't disqualify her in Trumpworld!

Sen. Murphy reminds Kristi Noem of her duty to uphold the law *as passed by Congess*. The Trump administration's refusal to follow the law across the board, substituting their own autocratic dictates, is a gross attack on the Constitution.

Medical care is going to be expensive, as it requires local provision (hard to outsource) and high capital (human/tech) relative to average personal income. We should work on cost-cutting strategies at the same time as increasing govt support to ensure universal coverage.

Sen. John Curtis (R-Utah) had a very interesting response to Trump's speech. He reminded us that the condition of the presidency is a result of our society and that we must work from the ground up, starting with our personal decisions: family, business, and entertainment. youtu.be/Jrevg2SGSRM?...

Phil Boileau of Utah:
This is a picture of zoomed-in text from a Forward Party meme. Phil Boileau of Utah says, "Our politics are clearly a mess, and I'm afraid that soon it'll get so bad that the system will no longer be able to self-correct. I want my father, a veteran, to return to a feeling of optimism for the country he proudly served. I want my baby daughter to be protected by a high-functioning government that can adapt to a changing world, and has her best interest as its true priority. I volunteer with Forward for their sake."

I have not studied Greenspan's ideology closely, but my impression is that he's not pure Randian (Objectivist). In general to play nicely with others it requires compromising for practical or political reasons.

Rand is mostly developing a maximal individualism without looking at how societies work. She scores some points on collectivism. Greed is not virtuous, although markets can be defended as channeling such self-interest into materially good outcomes by coordinating resources to what is demanded.

Rather this is a characterization of conservatives drawn by the Left. Although insensitive to the struggles of non-whites or the working poor, ideological conservatives normally have a belief that the law should be applied evenly and fairly. Of course, Trump is not conservative...

The GOP is beholden to Trump. It looks like the Dems will continue their trajectory to the Left. We need a new centrist party focused on transpartisan values and pragmatism aka The American Way. I think @fwdparty.bsky.social might be such a vehicle.
