Every year my mom reminds me to stay off the roads on nye for fear of drunk drivers. And it’s not an unfounded fear. Free transit on nye is just a good public safety policy. Just pay the operators double for the night tho cuz I don’t envy them

The thing is, you can replace “cruel” in this sentence with funny, artistic, thoughtful, thoughtless, compassionate, greedy, kinky, creative, or any of 1000 other adjectives. Why are so many of us only able to see us as exceptional in our faults?

And for every person who dies at the hand of such brutality from law enforcement, there’s dozens who were lucky enough to live but unfortunately don’t get the attention or headlines because the officers showed enough restraint to save their own asses.

“You’ll be visited by three spirits” The three spirits:
The beastie boys, late 80s, early 90s. Left to right: ad rock in a puffy black jacket with grey hoodie underneath, mike d with black sunglasses, red flat brimmed baseball cap, gold chains over a black hoodie under an open denim jacket, mca in a black bomber jacket with white sleeves. All with their fingers or thumbs tucked into their respective jeans

Before anyone jumps on this to disparage the broad concept of housing and treatment programs, know that this is a problem of privatized healthcare and public-private partnerships. Like with hospice and other care services, companies take the government money without providing the care.

Being a billionaire must be insane. You can buy new teeth, new skin. All your chairs cost 20,000 dollars and weigh 2,000 pounds. Your life is just a series of your own preferences. In terms of cognitive impairment it's probably like being kicked in the head by a horse every day

It’s a kind of fantasy to think these super powerful corporations are petrified of Trump when they are transparently making investments & putting deposits down on access to power. The story here is look at all these corporations & billionaires throwing off their thin facade of humanity to cash in.

Child care remains the most fascinating part of the economy to me
Since the fund's establishment, the District of Columbia's child care workers have seen their wages rise by just over $10,000 a year, on average, setting off what researchers describe as a chain reaction: With some level of financial stability, teachers have been far less likely to quit. Reduced turnover means child care centers and home-based providers are no longer struggling to recruit and train new employees. Meanwhile, families are finding there are now more child care slots. And with more experienced teachers staying on the job, children are receiving better care.

Thank goodness we have the New York fucking times to tell us that people feel better about healthcare when they don’t have to use it. Also what kinda dipshit lumps “fair”and “poor” together and calls it a day? This is “nuance” like offering an “opposing opinion” to climate change.

“Violent drug addicts” and “severe mental illness” are also propaganda words. If we wanna be extra annoying (and correct), pretty much all words can be “propaganda” and propaganda isn’t an inherently bad thing. Instead, we should ask questions like “why was this word chosen for this context?”

Reduce traffic death and injury by reducing car traffic. Extend subways/rail systems (including under Roosevelt) and created dedicated bus and bike lanes. More freedom for people to move, and more sustainable and less polluting options. Don’t let cars dominate everything from roads to paychecks.

To be frank, is there actually any public safety rationale to catching the assassin? Like out of all murderers it seems that this one is least likely to be a threat to the general public. If anything, it seems that the pursuit itself spells a greater risk to public safety than the perp does.

Is it nice to make those jokes? Not particularly. But we live in a society that has trained us not to expect compassion when misfortune befalls us, only ruinous bills, corporate indifference, and disrespect. To demand a performance of niceties from those denied the barest humanity is grotesque.

If there was a “coarsening” of society, surely it occurred when businesses were established to profit off denying people healthcare. The main joke people are making in response to Thompson’s death is merely to treat it with the bloodless bureaucratic indifference that these companies perfected.

It’s so interesting to see these urgent exhortations to reestablish decorum. I have not seen evidence of a “coarsening” of American society. If anything, the opposite: I’ve seen thousands of individuals asserting their humanity and protesting the indignity of the system UHC profits from.
