New #bioinformatics blog post that revisits an old favourite topic of mine: JABBA awards. These are given out to software tools with names that are 'Just Another Bogus Bioinformatics Acronym'. Is bioinformatics software naming still an issue in 2026? Yes. Yes, it is. www.acgt.me/blog/2026/9/...

I've decided to start making a catalogue of every website I've ever built (including blogs). This has led me to write a blog post about the very *first* website I created, which was all the way back in the late 1990s. www.keithbradnam.com/blog/2026/8/...

Back in 1997, building a website meant typing HTML by hand. My first website was called 'By 'eck, it's worse than Barnsley’ and this post takes a nostalgic look at how this website came to be. I also ...

At work, I have to use a PC running Microsoft apps. So to see my calendar, I have to open Outlook and that has a risk of me getting distracted by my email inbox. I came up with a solution that lets me see just my calendar without being distracted by my inbox. www.keithbradnam.com/blog/2026/6/...

Did you know that today is #TakeAWalkOutdoorsDay? 🚶 Taking walks, especially outside in green spaces, is a great form of ‘social prescribing’. This is an approach that connects individuals with non-medical services, activities, and groups within their community to improve health and #MentalHealth.

Even when projects are assessed at their conclusion (looking at levels and types of engagement) it feels very rare that projects look at how much *time* is spent on the #DigitalCommunications aspects of it. I.e. what is the ultimate cost for each click or page view when you factor in staff costs.

Keith Bradnam @kbradnam.bsky.social · 07/01/2026
For bigger projects I feel that they should not only end with a report that looks at the success (or failure) of any digital comms, but that the success metrics should be established *before* the project commences. In my own experience, this almost never happens.

It’s common to be asked me ‘How many hits?’ did something get but there is often no interest in wanting more details. E.g. if a webpage gets 100K hits some people might be pleased to see a big number. But if those 100K hits are only from 1K *visits*, then this might be due to spurious traffic.

Whether it is a single social media post to promote a webinar or a bigger coordinated campaign running for months across multiple channels, people often like to see that something has been published but are far less interested in how it performed.

I’ve been doing #DigitalCommunications as a full-time job for a decade and doing it as part of my previous career as a scientist for much longer. There’s a recurring challenge that I have noticed regarding the people who request ‘content’ to be put out on digital channels.

Today I've passed the milestone of *one million steps* walked on my walking pad since I purchased it in late October!🚶‍♂️ That's an average of 6,339 steps a day over this period and a total distance of about 400 miles walked...all while working. h/t to @hailley.co who inspired me to buy it.
Graph showing daily progress towards 1,000,000 steps walked on my walking pad while working.

x-axis is a date axis from 25 October 2024 until today (31 March 2025).

Y-axis counts from zero to 1 million.

Data points mostly form a straight line with an increased daily rate of steps from early in 2025.

London’s skyline changes so fast. For the last five years, the lop-sided ‘1 Blackfriars’ has dominated the views around the Blackfriars Bridge. Now, the 50 storey ‘Opus’ — part of the Bankside Yards development — is starting to obscure views of 1 Blackfriars from the east. #London #Architecture

We've been running this for a few months now and can already see that the QR codes have been used almost 700 times. More information about it in this blog post written by my colleague: www.rcpsych.ac.uk/news-and-fea...

Improving how we share our mental health information by using QR codes
In this blog post, the College’s Web team discuss why we've added QR codes to many of our award-winning mental health information pages – and why it’s good news both for our members and for patients.

This is to make it easier for doctors to share this information with patients during a consult. E.g. a psychiatrist can bring up the page on their computer and the patient just scans the QR code to get the page on their phone. No need for emails or printing out paper!

I think I may have listened to just a little too much politics news this year! 😀 This was partly due to their being elections in both the UK and the USA. I will definitely try to step back from listening to so much politics in 2025 as I don’t think it is generally healthy for me. #YearInReview

My boys have somehow amassed *4* different advent calendars each this year. I tried explaining to my six-year old that, when I was his age, advent calendars didn’t contain chocolates…they just contained a little picture. He looked at me quizzically and asked ‘Was that in the olden times?’. 🤣
