Specimens are not biologically interchangeable. CSF beats plasma in glioma. Urine carries the prostate signal. Rectal mucus sits closer to colorectal biology than blood or stool. The whole grid, by clinical question, in one figure. Open access: doi.org/10.3390/canc...
Heatmap of biospecimen suitability. Rows are specimen types: tissue biopsy, plasma, CSF, urine, stool, rectal mucus, other local fluids, and combined multimodal. Columns are translational questions: early detection, tissue of origin, actionable genotype, MRD/relapse, response dynamics, local biology, microbiome signal, and pathway depth. Each cell is scored High, Moderate or Low for relative expected utility, not absolute assay performance. Plasma scores high for MRD, response dynamics and actionable genotype, but low for local biology and microbiome signal. Rectal mucus scores high for early detection, tissue of origin, local biology and microbiome signal. Tissue biopsy scores high for pathway depth and actionable genotype but low for MRD and response. Combined multimodal scores high across every column.

All of the American Public Health Labs (APHL) Global Health team has been furloughed. This is everyone outside of the US, including deployed staff and locally employed staff. These are people working on infectious diseases (and more) all over the world. Designing tests. Improving diagnostics. Improving lab procedures. This is a huge team, doing critical work.

Critical disease-related publications like MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report) are frozen, with no release this week. This report is a lifeblood of health events in the USA. it has been published weekly without pause since 1960. It is essential for keeping all US (and global) researchers updated on outbreaks and investigations. This week alone there were reportedly to be 3 publications on the bird flu. The publication is also a likely venue for further information about the ongoing Tuberculosis outbreak in Kansas. (Source: Reuters)

The balancing act between public health and food safety is very interesting, reducing salt in foods helps the population as a whole by reducing deaths, whilst too little salt in some foods increases the chance of Clostridium botulinum growing and causing botulism.
