i always have to laugh when a (machine knitting) session involves a screwdriver, an oily wrench, a hundred tiny poky needles, and thin springy wires that could take someone's eyes out
using a screwdriver to adjust the screws on the ribbing attachment on the machine

the same text with edits visible vs edits, obscured, all powered by `<ins>` and `<del>` and CSS
Text with insertions and deletions made visible. Deletions are struck out and given a lighter color. Insertions are written out in the space above the line in a different color and accompanied by a proofreader's caret at the insertion point. The same text with edits papered over. The deletions are fully gone, while the insertions are in the main text in the same color, with no indication of the editing process.

went birding with my new camera and the zoom lens!! at mount auburn cemetery!! got these photos!! practicing just trying to see (and hear) where the birds are and sit long enough and look hard enough to discover how many there actually are. is that birding?
Two photos of a red-tailed hawk sitting on a branch, with a bright open space behind it. In the second photo, another bird is in blurry flight behind the hawk.A bird (possibly a white-breasted nuthatch?) perches amid a mess of branches. Two photos of the red-tailed hawk perched on a branch in a different tree. The second photo is zoomed in on the hawk looking right into the lens.A great blue heron at the edge of a pond; in the background, a lovely willow and a tree with pink blossoms.

channelling my energy into this small act right now! posted this to my instagram story in the hopes of being a resource to any website-curious friends :)
have u always wanted ur own website?

hey friends! if you have been wanting to set up your own website but don't know where to start or want an accountability buddy to help see you through - let me know!

i don't have all the answers but i really want people to have a beautiful independent space of their own, away from increasingly hostile big tech platforms. let me know <3 you don't have to be a creator to have a website! some potential reasons you could have a website:
- to let people know where to find you
- to blog and write all your serious and silly thoughts
- to share your favourite things (movies, music, videos, pictures, links, wikipedia articles, animal facts)
- to store things you don't want to forget (resolutions, goals, ideas)
- to display your resume (if you want to go profesh)
- just because you can!!! who says two or three companies have to own your soul on this big and beautiful internet of ours!!

A syntax tree, no longer with the words all aligned on the bottom. Now, the tree starts at the top node and cascades downwards.

WIP: mixing text elements in DOM with drawing on canvas, for a visual tree builder :) i think i'm trying to evoke the practice of methodically diagramming the syntax of a sentence, without asking the user to learn all the formal rules, necessarily. i… hope that's ok (?) (we'll see? lmk ??)
The sentence "I went home to my mother", where I've clicked on the words "my" and "mother" to connect them with a parent node, with lines drawn between the three elements. The same sentence, now connecting the word "to" to the node that represents the words "my mother", creating another node at a third level.

i've been wanting to do something with poetry + programming + linguistics (esp syntax trees) for a while. here are some stills from a first exploration!! i'm using the tree structure to create an annotated/multi-level poem, w definitions/sidenotes for each constituent :) #linguistics #syntax
Syntax tree for the sentence, "I went home to my mother." I'm hovering over the Determiner Phrase (DP) that constitutes the words "my mother", and a side note has appeared that reads, "how long she stays a mother; how embracing her daughter becomes".Syntax tree for the sentence, "I went home to my mother." I'm hovering over the null past tense marker and a side note has appeared that reads, "the scene replays in the rearview mirror, windowed in a miniature frame".

waaitt this is absolutely when i was trying to think of re "fantasy software"! eldritch horrors living in our computers… looking everyday tech in the eyes and conceptualising it in this high concept, fantastical, unsettling way that reflects our mundane worries and dystopias
A thread of four tweets.

Tweet 1: "wondering what 'fantasy software' could look like"

Tweet 2: "i know sci-fi/fantasy can be pretty blurred — i'm not too familiar but it seems like one of the broad delineators is tech itself?"

Tweet 3: "a first thought was that it's not possible to have tech in a fantasy setting without moving the needle more towards sci-fi — but maybe a more expansive idea of 'software' is present already — bioware, wetware, biology, ecology"

Tweet 4: "or maybe it also has to do with whether the worldbuilding is intended to feel (futuristic?) (in our current human timeline?) — like the rusty droids in star wars or the bonding tendrils in avatar don't particularly make me think of sci-fi"

(re)new(ed) work: I Name This Feeling is a tool for writing poetry by giving names to your feelings i-name-this-feeling.life
The prompt "what i feel is" followed by repetitions of "rage and rage and rage".A couple of poems in the archive of submissions: the rage poem from the first image, and a poem titled "being online is all", followed by the single word "grief".This was initially born out of the summer of 2020 as a way to process the overwhelming and overlapping tidal waves of emotion that I was feeling across many communities. The feelings were big, wild brushstrokes, but it helped to identify them and know, at the peaks, it was rage and rage and rage I was feeling.

Part of the process of building the tool was thinking about how details in the interface of constructing the poem served as metaphors for emotional expression. How does it feel to blow the words up as big as building graffiti, as opposed to scratching them tiny into the underside of a desk? In between the building blocks of feeling words, how do those entangled masses spill over and well up in the conjunctions? What do those pauses between words hold; and, how, too, are we coming in and out of our poems of emotion—emphatically, assuredly, or perhaps breathlessly, elliptically, with more still to be voiced?
