After ICE left empty-handed, I headed back to my car, drained and worried we had failed the family. A woman one street down came over and thanked me for pushing back against ICE. She said that she had been afraid to leave her home. That made me feel a little better. Like we had done some good.

Once inside, ICE searched the house and from everything I’ve heard, did not find the individual they were searching for. They did traumatize the family though, including a child. I’ve so far seen no indication that ICE had a judicial warrant. (Frederick, MD - September 4, 2026)

In the afternoon, ICE started getting impatient. They would take off down the street without warning at high speed, drive back and forth, then re-take their position. Again, this is a residential neighborhood where kids play. One ICE SUV intentionally drove close to a grandma holding a sign.

It was clear early on that ICE was keenly interested in one part of the neighborhood. Community members set up on corners in that area, holding signs such as, “La Migra Esta Aqui” and “No ICE in Our Community.” People drove by, honking in support and dropping off bottled water and other supplies.

Some of those corners that had ICE at them were school bus stops. Locals rallied. They stood watch as kids got on the bus and were dropped off. They helped escort at risk neighbors to their jobs and kept track of where ICE had posted up. They took shifts, keeping eyes on ICE through the night.

Friday morning, I was gardening when I checked my phone. A request had gone out for help. For 25+ hours, ICE had been laying siege to a quiet neighborhood in Frederick, MD. Community members were afraid, some didn’t want to leave their homes. ICE vehicles seemed to be lurking on every corner.

San Jacinto needs a landlord registry with real enforcement, not just a list nobody checks. Tying business licenses to compliance means owners who profit from this community can't ignore what happens on their property. Renters deserve protection, and a city that is on their side.
