Unfortunately, yes. It's because of the long-running history surrounding the usage of calling black people "monkeys" as a racial slur/aggression. It was used to imply that they were "less evolved" (based on Darwinism) or "less civilized." Seeing as Nessa is dark-skinned, that's why it's racist.
