This article has made me reflect on a few music related moments of bonding with my father. All positive! I had a great dad! -Often when he would drink too much he would sit me in a chair and make me listen to Beth Orton. He was hugely embarrassed when I told him this after he quit drinking.

I was in middle school. I only heard about this afterwards, but our gym teacher told his class of students that the air force base nearby was a likely next target. He gave them permission to call their parents on base to say goodbye, then he wouldn't let them leave the locker room. Kept his job!

It’s hard to take a critique of higher ed seriously from someone who appears to think that meritocracy exists and there aren’t oodles of highly qualified people who could fill vacant positions — and thus affirmative action implies a lowering of standards or not hiring “the brightest” (ahem whitest).

“Six current and former Forest Service officials said the response was greater than what is typical for a fire of that scale that did not pose a significant threat to life or property.”
In total, about nine aircraft, including helicopters, air tankers and tactical planes, responded to the blaze on July 12, according to a Post analysis of flight paths, part of an effort that lasted a few hours and cost nearly $115,000 in federal money. The Post analysis found these assets traveled from across the West to Idaho's Alturas Lake, pear where the Cabin Creek Fire was burning.
At least some
of the aircraft were diverted from efforts to contain fires elsewhere in the state, according to two agency officials and the Post analysis of the flight paths.

God it must have been thrilling to be a catty male historian in 1910.
Screenshot of a historical article from 1910 about the "JOIN, or DIE" snake cartoon. "Not that historians have neglected them—on the contrary, a good deal has been said about them. But unfortunately what has been said has been mainly inaccurate, and when writers have attempted to reproduce the original snake device they have, almost without exception, reproduced something else."

Screenshot of book page with highlighted text reading: "But the person who was probably of the greatest influence in bringing Lady Mary close to Walpole at this time was his mistress, Maria Skerret. She was, Lady Mary wrote, in the first rank of her "amies choisies." Their friendship was so notable, indeed, that Pope linked them as Sappho and Phryne, who always attended the auctions together."
