I hope your aunt liked her name. The -ina suffix was a common way of making a girl's name in Scotland. Georgina and Wilhelmina are widely used outwith Scotland, but in addition to Donaldina Macdonald, I found Angusina, Hectorina and Gordonina also in the poorhouse records.

I spent some time working on poorhouse records in Scotland. A Macdonald family were admitted. The father was Donald Macdonald, the first son also Donald Macdonald. The second son was Donaldson Macdonald. The third was Macdonald Macdonald. The youngest child, a daughter, Donaldina Macdonald.

Road atlases, A-Zs, and OS maps. My mum also used to order route directions from the AA. Still use the first three, not least because of the number of times we've been places where the directions include the phrase "ignore the sat nav", or there's no signal and no map.

Okay, so there's a gun on the cover, and I'm not even thinking about what the other object could be. It's not like I live in East Central London or Guernsey.*

That makes me think that Ellis Peters knew exactly what she was doing when she named Brother Jerome in the Cadfael books.

Maybe it's the start of the movement, like the many multiple lives books of a few years back?

Thank you! I've only done two classes so far, but it has been great fun.

Tap is great! The class I have started is Latin Movers (over 55s), where we do Latin steps and rhythms, but not as a partner dance, i.e., not the ballroom version.

River Cartwright was probably already messing it up, all by himself.

Pesky viruses! I was already going to miss out on one class because of an appointment I couldn't reschedule, so I was hoping I wouldn't have to miss another one. It's also a beautiful autumn day out there, and I am too full of cold to go out and appreciate it.

Kat W @katwhen.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
One more annoying thing about this damn cold is that I'd started going to a dance class again, for the first time since around 2012/3, and I had been really enjoying it, but obviously had to cancel today's. I've been utterly wiped out after the classes, but feeling it was worth it.

Something for Monday morning: a friend WINOBS sent me this video of a stunning dance to the song Pop Muzik. I love how the costume's simplicity, with just a few sharp details, emphasises the sharp choreography and performance. CN: flickering lights on the video. www.youtube.com/watch?app=de...

Ah, the 80s answer to the Spice Girls. I haven't heard that song in a long time, probably not since watching it on TotP in the 80s.

Thank you and yes, me too. I'd rather not have a cold, either, as because I'm immune-suppressed they tend to last for three weeks or so, but it's still not as bad as Covid.

I'm not saying it's a long time since either of us have had a (stinking) cold, but the bottle of Olbas oil I retrieved from the bathroom cabinet has a best before date of August 2022. I've done three Covid tests and they've all been negative so seems unlikely to be Covid, thankfully.

I read a few chapters of it way back when, and found it to be stultifyingly crass in its writing, and mind-numbingly tedious to read. I am still boggled that it could be taken so seriously, and only recently realised it was part of all the whole trainwreck.

British, 4 cups of caffeinated tea*, 6 cups of decaffeinated tea* and 1 cup of fruit tea. *1 teabag in a 4-cup pot for both caffeinated and decaffeinated tea, because that's a strong enough brew for me.

Just so we’re clear, the “legitimate concerns” people who are “just asking questions” now consider the following to be enemy organisations: Amnesty International. The RNLI. Doctors Without Borders. Just in case you’re wondering which side you should be on.

Does it have any scenes where adults ask a small child what they want to do when they grow up and the small child responding with total bewilderment as they'd calculated their odds of survival in the projected future in which they would be grown-up were not great?

70s media, including the person who gave a talk at my primary school about how the fossil fuels were all going to run out in the 1990s thereby leading to total societal collapse, made it very hard for kids* of the era to believe in any kind of non-apocalyptic future. *Or just me.

Yes, the nurse said they had to spend ages complaining about the "cheaper" plasters before the decision was reversed. Here's hoping your bean counters get hammered from all directions and without your mum or anyone else having to suffer.
020
Kat W @katwhen.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
And rightly so. Bean counters are the worst. A nurse was telling me about the time their bean counters mandated cheaper plasters. The cheaper plasters had extra-strong adhesive. Many, many skin wounds later, plus associated expenses, and the marginally more expensive plasters were allowed again.
