This week’s recipe box: spiced cauliflower, chickpea and tahini tray bake. That’s tonight’s tea (well, for two out of three), couscous for tomorrow’s lunch and the rest of it for tomorrow night’s tea with jacket potatoes

I have mown the lawn. Hopefully for the last time this year as it becomes increasingly difficult in Autumn to coincide times I’m available with it being daylight and dry enough to get it done. Plus lawn mowing is not on my list of fun gardening activities

Tomato harvest, finally! It was a bad idea waiting to plant the tomatoes out until after our May half term holiday, although you’d think All The Sun over the summer would have helped.

No swimming lesson today because sick child. As a responsible parent, I left sick child at home with the other responsible parent and went off to the garden centre to ponder cyclamen. The garden centre was handing out free Autumn gonks(?!) which is just the thing for cheering up the sick child.

My Japanese Anemone hasn’t died, despite getting very shrivelled up in the heatwaves. It now has fresh leaves and some flowers and looks a lot better now I’ve removed all the shrivelled up bits.

This week’s holiday club requires wellies (plus packed lunch, 2 x snacks). Which was fine until I realised the existing wellies no longer fit. Fortunately there is another Big Tesco, with travelator, not far from church.

Has anyone seen the theatre adaptation of The Penelopiad? I’m trying to decide if it’d be worth all the hassle of getting two of us to the theatre simultaneously.

21.09, just found the email from holiday club (more sporty, less culture this week) announcing that it is Wet Wednesday tomorrow. That means still need to pack a change of clothes, towel and a water blaster(?!?!). Packed lunch ✅ 2 x snacks ✅

We’re working on the Guides Entomology badge, so made a pooter this afternoon so we can stare closely at insects. Much caterpillar excitement too as a colleague who Knows About These Things thinks the funky caterpillar we found last week might be a scarce one www.ywt.org.uk/blog/scarce-...
A pooter (thing for catching insects) made out of a big yogurt pot, two plastic tubes and some blu-tack. Held by a smallish white hand with a brown lawn and green hedge in the background.

I have been successionally sowing seeds for salad leaves with the idea of producing a continuous supply. This was going well until the blackbird realised there’s a nice container of damp soil to find worms in.

A level results and clearing time of year again. As a very shy and retiring 20yo I decided to get a job in my university’s clearing hotlines call centre for a fortnight to boost my confidence. It was quite a fortnight.

Finished work early today to attend the cultural performance of the year. Holiday Club does Shakespeare in a Week! The family dog was also required to attend, wearing his best woolly jumper which felt a bit mean in this weather.
Very well loved soft toy dog wearing a rainbow woolly knitted jumper and sitting on a knee in a theatre auditorium

People going to be eating a lot more pasta this year for reasons
John Lewis said colander sales were up by 40 per cent year on year as people without eclipse glasses followed advice to direct the sun's rays through the holes of a colander to see a projection of the eclipse on a piece of paper.

I wore my #TeaUp summer dress to work today. I really should have done this earlier. I made it over 11 years ago, in the days when I had time to do a two day dressmaking course, then was too bigly pregnant by that summer to wear it, and it only got worn once. It is nice and floaty and cool.

The Japanese Anemone is flowering, but really close to the ground, below a lot of leaves that have shrivelled up in the heat. I think I need to take some more root cuttings and think about growing it elsewhere in the garden.
