When you pat your dog after he’s been outdoors and you wonder what that gross thing is on your hand. Yuck.
A happy fluffy dog looks up at me oblivious to the fact that he has carried a slug into the house on his fur. The guilty slug is on a tissue on my lap and has been moved outdoors.

I'm not in the habit of shouting at the tv screen but Blue Lights has had me do it more than once. I am so invested in these characters.

This is the hypnotic stare of a dog who is trying to make me feel guilty about not sharing my carrot cake with him. 🐕😵‍💫
A large fluffy dog sits on a sofa and stares me right in the eye as I insensitively eat carrot cake without offering him any.

Dinner tonight. It was pretty great.

I groomed Jasper. He seems happy about it. 🐕🤎
A very shaggy dog poses while sitting for its owner yesterday A freshly groomed dog seems to grin as it poses in the same place today.

I made pork cutlets tonight with a method I saw online. Instead of pounding them, you use a tortilla press. It worked so well!
A thin pork chop in the process of being flattened by a tortilla press. On the left are two flattened chops ready to be breaded. On the right are two chops before they’ve been flattened in the tortilla press.

Little weirdo. Quite lovely. 🌱 I found this little guy on the side of my basil pot today. #cicada
A cicada sits on the edge of a round grey flower pot. It is facing forward with one wing clearly visible and the other tucked to its side.

Sad to hear about Glen Hansard. He had a singular way of singing. I love his song “Sure as the Rain”. “Light luminescent, hold on somehow Burn low if you have to, but don’t go out.”

I've been deep in family history research in the past few months. Today I was looking into a remote part of the family with the last name Park who named their son Mansfield. And he in turn called his son Mansfield.📚 Me with my English Lit degree found it funny.

This video clip of a swan landing on a lake is best enjoyed with AUDIO ON. Mute swans (Cygnus olor) are among the heaviest flying birds & require a long runway, which means we get the majestic approach, a few furious moments of webbed feet slapping on water, then the majestic splashdown.

Just got back from a week in Toronto visiting our daughters and going out and about. Still thinking about the wonderful cold beet soup (chlodnik) at the Ukrainian restaurant Hoyra on Bloor Street. They’ve just been open a year and are definitely worth a visit.

Be sure to use Al when making your next, I don't know, meal plan, for example. Definitely do not call your friend who loves to cook and ask her for her favorite recipes or tips or ways to save time making meals, because you will end
up talking for longer than you had hoped, hearing, perhaps, about her father's cancer diagnosis or how lonely she's been or even what she's planted in her spring garden and then lost with the early frost.

I've been too tired to read the past few days as we've been working on big house and garden projects. But today's a rainy day and I thought it would be nice to continue my book. Do you think I can find my prescription reading glasses anywhere? I wish they had a beeper.

Took a photo of the tree peonies today because there’s a full day of rain ahead and it’s hard to know how they’ll fare. There’s three more buds so hopefully more beauty to come. 🌱

When I opened the curtains, there was a kid off his bike picking one of my tulips. Because I waited all winter to see my tulips and they've just started to open, I knocked on the window and wagged my finger at him. He nodded so maybe it won't happen again. I hope his teacher likes her tulip.

The daffodils are just opening here. I would have left this in the garden but the rain last night left it flat so it was begging to come in. A beauty. 🌱

A WHOLE CIVILIZATION
WILL DIE TONIGHT
My son needs lunch, and I have to put his backpack together, but a whole civilization will die tonight, so I'm wondering if they've closed their schools.
Like, a snow day, maybe, except instead of snow it's
"keep your children home so if you die, you die together" — instead of "well open back up once the plows have cleared" it's
"we don't know if we'll be here tomorrow, hold your babies tight."
It's just "talk" I'm told, which I've been told before.
"It's how the president makes his deals." But I've never heard anyone talk about other human beings this way, and I'm not certain I can look my son in the eyes if we all agree to stomach it one more time.
A civilization will die tonight, but as I zip up his backpack and kiss him off to school I think: if this is what we call leadership then I'm not entirely sure ours isn't already dead.

I was five during the Cuban Missile Crisis. I still have vivid memories of a kid down the street yelling 'Khrushchev is coming' every time a plane flew over when we were playing outside. I didn't understand what was going on in the world but I knew it was something scary. That fear remains.

Just turned off the gold twinkle lights on the big shrub out front. I leave the Christmas lights on until the first day of spring. I was reluctant to turn them off this time as there's still snow on the ground but if I pretend it's spring, it will start behaving like spring. Right?

March weather can be mean and beautiful. A week ago it was 12C and almost all of the snow melted. Since then we’ve had an ice storm and, last night, about 10 cm of heavy snow. But I heard a cardinal sing its spring song today so there is hope.
