We'll have a full analysis of the Conservatives' proposed inheritance tax cuts tomorrow. But, for now, three charts. 1. Who would benefit from the cuts?

It's as if Andy Burnham had been injected with a truth drug. Brexit has done more harm than good, so let's try other options. Triple lock has to go, social care will be reformed if it kills us, double or quits...it's absolutely working in the hall, in the emotion of the moment. But outside it?

What does a sniper position at Memorial Circle actually defend against? Not China. Not a submarine. Not a missile. It overlooks a bridge, a traffic circle, and the front door of the National Mall. Those are places where Americans march. www.jackhopkinsnow.com

New PISA data out England is now top ten in all three areas (reading, maths, science) and the second highest performing country outside of east Asia (after Estonia). This is a huge public policy success.

According to ERA5 global sea surface temperatures have set a new all time record. This is likely the warmest sea surface temperatures have been in at least the last 125,000 years. What’s more concerning is this will likely rise further in the coming months.

I suspect there's something to this (by @iandunt.bsky.social: iandunt.substack.com/p/clacton-by...)
Why? Because Farage is no Trump. The Reform leader does not posses that ineffable blood-magic, the link between leader and follower, that Trump enjoys. He can secure the support of between a fifth to a quarter of voters, absolutely. But he cannot convince enough Brits to submit their conscience and their independence of thought to his will.

I don’t think this is Farage’s fault. He is really very effective as a political communicator. I think the reason he struggles is because Brits are not Americans. We are basically incapable of sincerity. We are averse to idealism, positive or negative. We do not do religion, and therefore lack a pattern of behaviour in which we relinquish our minds to a spiritual leader. The whole muscle-memory of evangelism, from pulpit bashers to TV preachers, means nothing to us. We do not have a pattern of historic racial politics which slots political debates into a pre-existing us-vs-them narrative.

We are too cynical, too jaded, too keen to mock. These are usually ugly qualities. They prevent us from having serious political discussions and reduce politics to a permanent state of listless pragmatism. But in this particular area it is actually quite healthy. It’s really very difficult to imagine any figure who is able to do here what Trump does in the US.

That’s not to say we’re immune to populism or the extreme right. We absolutely demonstrably are not. But we may be immune to the unquestioning hero-worship and epistemological collapse that we see across the Atlantic. This was a test case for that type of politics. It showed that there was some support for it in his support base, but none outside of it.

At a school I taught at a teacher confiscated an air rifle when a pupil brought it in, then returned it at break time , when said pupil went out and shot a fellow pupil . This was 1990s. Union advised teacher to leave .

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is requiring service members to screen for low testosterone levels. Ironically, the military lifestyle itself is more likely to lower T levels.
