Starbucks’ demise began when they decided to prioritize fast/mobile and drive-thru over the cozy “third place” coffeehouse vibe that made it successful in the first place (imo). I miss my Starbucks of 10 years ago😢 www.pbs.org/newshour/eco...

Starbucks to shutter 250 stores in North America, a year after big wave of closings
The company didn't say Thursday which coffeehouses will close, how many are located in the U.S. or how many are unionized.

Today’s blog post is something I stumbled across while doing prep for the upcoming semester. Looking for some creative inspiration? This free online “book” of Steve Jobs’ collected words gives access to insights from one of the most intriguing minds ever. katherinewikoff.com/2026/08/27/s...

Just came across this short writing exercise piece done for my writing group in December 2022. Seeing it again now, I thought it had some fun associations and wordplay, just kind of a nice metaphor/allegory for life, so I decided to share 🙂 #writing katherinewikoff.com/2026/08/18/i...

If life is a journey, not a destination, how do you pack?
This was a question/prompt for a writing exercise done for a meeting of my writing group in December 2022. I was going through my folders to organize all the ephemera related to some larger writing…

One of generative AI’s biggest weaknesses is not knowing when to shut up. If it can say something well once, it will say it again, like 10 different ways. Only a strong writer with a feel for good writing can shut it down. Dear ChatGPT: Learn to read the room, buddy! 😀

A blog post written 14 years ago, discovered in my drafts folder today. An odd combination of topics circling around representation of repugnant subjects in art. As I say in my notes: Here it is at last, for what it’s worth, in the raw and better late than never. katherinewikoff.com/2026/08/10/p...

I’m exploring what it means to have an “authentic” experience as a tourist or traveler. Particularly interested in all aspects of digital interaction before, during, and after the physical travel itself. Any good articles or books you’d recommend? #AcademicSky #UX #travel #authenticity #tourism

A journey down the rabbit hole, prompted by my need to monitor the weather for approaching thunderstorms in order to give my dog trazodone appropriately and winding up at new insights on gymnastics by way of an etymological detour around Sault Ste. Marie. katherinewikoff.com/2026/08/07/s...

The connotations of “authentic” seem SO different from its oldest root word. In Ancient Greek, αὐθέντης (authéntēs) means “perpetrator, murderer, absolute ruler.” Versus today’s “original,” genuine,” and “trustworthy.” 😮

Weird Al and Dolly Parton are different aspects of the same ethos. Both are prolific, great, genre-defining musicians iconic for intentionally playful, exaggerated personas but universally loved for their authenticity (& kindness). All while working for decades AND maintaining a sense of privacy.

Like “ghost signs,” old structures carry whispers of a city’s past and offer dreamlike connections to other eras and the people whose lives once intersected with them. Today, Hollywood is like a ghost ship, an empty dream factory with abandoned equipment. Unmoored and directionless, Los Angeles shivers in the void of the fantasy it can’t forget.

Got a new phone over a year ago but somehow didn’t transfer Bluesky over. Finally today, after charging my old phone and using the app there to update my password, which for whatever reason I couldn’t do on my laptop, I was able to open the app on my new (old by now😂) phone. Hello, Bluesky!❤️

AI-augmented writing improves readability, language diversity, and informativeness, but lacks details and insights. Reviewers struggle to distinguish human and AI writing. Guidelines should promote impartial evaluations, regardless of biases against GenAI. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
