Another vanishingly rare post from me on here to say that my PhD thesis has now been uploaded to the Edinburgh Research Archive! Find it here: doi.org/10.7488/era/... Images of the manga/anime had to be redacted for copyright reasons, but hopefully there is still something to take from it!

Regarding Ghibli adaptations, I really like When Marnie Was There. I feel the switch to the Japanese location works well here (not sure it did quite so well in Arietty and have never read Howl) and the story lends itself well to the Ghibli style, visually and in terms of characters.

It's so cool how I can read so many kanji but only know how to write very few of them. I guess it's like how I can recognize many people's faces but wouldn't be able to picture most of them in my mind when they aren't right in front of me.

I was looking at old magazines on Mandarake and now I'm kind of obsessed with these covers of "Teen Look" from the late '60s / early '70s.

The American Manga Awards is great starting point in bringing recognition to all the folks working on the localization, ESPECIALLY freelancers. I truly believe there should be more awards & more spotlight on these folks.
A quote from me taken after the AMA awards: "This is great way of bringing honor to all the people, especially on the American side of all the hard work, from the editors to freelancers to translators to letterers. I think each one of them deserves a recognition and award for all their efforts. And I think this manga awards is a great starting point. I do think there should be more.”

This might be the worst TL advice I've ever seen. The number one thing I tell students is to look everything up all the time. Look it up in monolingual dictionaries, bilingual dictionaries, corpora, thesauruses, whatever! The ability to question your own knowledge is the mark of a good translator.

“Digital Pasts and Futures: Internet Histories, Digital Interculturality and Reimagining Digitality”

Call-for-Papers: The Fourth ReDICo (Researching Digital Interculturality Co-operatively) Conference
Online, 23-24 June 2025

In this conference we would like to bring together scholars who engage with internet histories, digital futures and digital interculturality so as to initiate a discussion regarding the reimagining of digitality, not least its relationship to interculturality. We are, thus, interested in wide and interdisciplinary approaches that go beyond the presentism that often marks media and communication studies, while also engaging with alternative visions of how digitality can be construed, not least from an intercultural perspective.

For more details see: https://hub.redico.eu/call-for-papers/111/digital-pasts-and-futures-internet-histories-digital-interculturality-and-reimagining-digitality-conference-online-23-24-june-2025

Please send an abstract (250 words) of your intended paper to: redico@uni-jena.de by 28 February 2025. It is intended that a selection of the papers presented will be published following a peer review process in book form, funding pending, with the transcript Publishing House in the Series “Studies in Digital Interculturality”. The conference is without fees, completely online and is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).

Keynote speakers that have already been confirmed include Prof. Valérie Schafer (University of Luxembourg), Associate Prof. Helle Strandgaard Jensen (Aarhus University), Prof. Ethan Zuckerman (University of Massachusetts, Amherst) and Prof. Ramesh Srinivasan (University of California, Los Angeles).

Sei Shōnagon, the Relatable Queen of classical Japanese literature
Excerpt from the Pillow Book (under Hateful Things): One is in the middle of a story when someone butts in and tries to show that he is the only clever person in the room. Such a person is hateful, and so, indeed, is anyone, child or adult, who tries to push himself forward14. Hateful Things

One is in a hurry to leave, but one's visitor keeps chattering away. If it is someone of no importance, one can get rid of him by saying, 'You must tell me all about it next time'; but, should it be the sort of visitor whose presence commands one's best behaviour, the situation is hateful indeed. Many misc. hateful things: To envy others, to speak badly of others, to be inquisitive about trivial things, to be telling a story and get interrupted by a crying baby, cawing crows, a dog barking when your side piece comes calling, when your side piece starts snoring, thus blowing up your spotA man with whom one is having an affair keeps singing the praises of some woman he used to know. Even if it is a thing of the past, this can be very annoying. How much more so if he is still seeing the woman! (Yes sometimes I find that it is not as unpleasant as all that.)
