it's really impressive the dichotomy between the miracles that modern medicine can perform in specific areas on one hand, tied with the absolute stuck-in-the-middle-ages state of other areas of modern medicine

lol yup, I went through the same exact thing when I discovered I couldn't eat gluten about 15 yrs ago did not feel worth it to start eating gluten again just for the blood test!

but lectins/salicylates are some deeper cut investigations; definitely don't worry about those until you determine if a low histamine diet gets you sufficient improvement first! :)

Kate Violette @kateviolette.com · 29/07/2026
(example: I'm fine with salicylates but do have to limit lectins quite a lot. if I weren't an armchair nutrition nerd, it would be difficult to know how to meet my nutritional needs between my strict low histamine restrictions and low lectin restrictions.)

Kate Violette @kateviolette.com · 29/07/2026
2. for folks with MCAS specifically: lectins and/or salicylates can also be an issue in the diet. while I think most folks can experiment safely enough with low histamine diets on their own, I would encourage chatting with a medical provider who knows this stuff if considering lectins or salicylates

you're very welcome! :) I'm happy to help! two other resources I'll mention: 1. Mast Cell 360 used to have a histamine foods list on their website; it's now annoyingly hidden behind an email list sign-up, but it's also a great resource and when it and the SIGHI list disagree, I default to MC360

Kate Violette @kateviolette.com · 29/07/2026
(This is also one of the big reasons a lot of folks with MCAS struggle with citric acid as an added ingredient -- as an additive, it's usually made from mold, also. Used to be made industrially from citrus fruits, but it's cheaper to make from mold, so... capitalism is why we can't have nice things)

Tapioca flour or starch isn't a gum and so is very low histamine! I rely on it a lot as an ingredient
120
Kate Violette @kateviolette.com · 28/07/2026
They vary! The SIGHI list is a good reference for individual gums (plus a ton of other food additives) There are actually one or two gums that are lower in histamine; supposedly xanthan gum is lower?, but I don't trust that one since it's often made from mold

💜 You have it even worse than I do, but I still have it bad enough that I understand -- not being able to eat comfort food for comfort reasons is low key torture

man one of the things I love most in this world is taking some time to go deep on the work of a musician I love today's deep dive is Oscar Peterson, *easily* in my top 3 fav jazz artists I never get tired of hearing him play; any album with him on it is no skips for me

Yeah, it's gotten worse in recent yrs, most health products aren't really geared towards nutrition nerds anymore, it's more for ppl who want the air of being healthy without actually paying attention to it Feels like the same cultural trend as AI: be an artist without actually being an artist! etc

(But if I'm making the cake myself, you can sure as heck bet I'm reaching for the natural food coloring at the store. Even if I'm making the cake for someone else. Food choices, like everything, are political.)

Kate Violette @kateviolette.com · 28/07/2026
PS: To be clear, I'm not a total buzzkill on unnecessary ingredients. Will I eat something like artificial food coloring on a birthday cake now and then? You bet I will. Because that's an every once in a while thing and not something I'm relying on for daily nutritional intake.

I just wish more people gave a damn about what they were putting into their bodies bc: 1. It would benefit their own bodies and health! 2. It would make it possible at all for sick people to be able to buy more pre-made stuff at the store!
260
Kate Violette @kateviolette.com · 28/07/2026
So before it was a choice but now it's an actual accessibility issue When you shove a bunch of unnecessary ingredients into a food item, fewer people can buy it! And usually it's the very people who most need help figuring out low-effort eating (= sick folks with restrictions) who now can't eat it.

Kate Violette @kateviolette.com · 28/07/2026
Why not just deal with slightly less than optimal texture? (Which again, doesn't even have to be the case, but too many food companies care more about swindling you out of your dollars with perfected products for the lowest production cost, than providing you something that's actually nutritious.)

Kate Violette @kateviolette.com · 28/07/2026
Gums are often high histamine, making most GF items at the grocery store unavailable to me. To be fair though, I avoided most gummy GF products even before becoming big sick. It's just not necessary. Why would I put something unnecessary like that into my body?

I'm in the middle of reading a book on gluten-free baking, and one of this book's big things is: you don't need gums in gluten-free baking! Like 90-95% of things you can make just as well if not even better without added gums.

Who will think of the label readers once again?! (I'm saying this dramatically for a funny effect but I'm also kind of actually mad about it.) I'm tired of being required to make everything from scratch because companies keep bastardizing their products. I'm too sick to make my own replacements!

(Now Vega's been bought and sold by private equity companies a couple times and their products are just the exact same swill as everything else on the market: no thought given to the finer points of nutrition and recovery, just rice protein and pea protein and then dressed up in unspecified flavors)
120
Kate Violette @kateviolette.com · 28/07/2026
So many food products are geared towards your baby-est consumer who never reads labels and demands everything always taste perfect I miss the very early days of Vega nutrition drinks (like ~2010 ish) because it was super good for nutrition (esp for athletes), and unapologetically tasted like trash

And the thing is, everyone just glosses over the historical--read: white supremacist--reasons why It's all the immigrant groups that at one point or another the American majority tried to paint as "not white enough": the Irish, Italians, Eastern Europeans, etc

(yes, and) These fucking surveys have *got* to stop separating out "Christian" vs "Catholic" like this Did they mean "Protestant" vs "Catholic"? Or are they actually counting Catholics twice: once as a standalone group, and a second time correctly counted under "Christianity"?

Really feels like the prevalence of men being "too tired" to protect their and their loved one's health is related to the whole thing where husbands are six times more likely to leave their wives if their wife gets a cancer diagnosis, than the other way around

I would only ever marry someone on my goddamn level, and I'm not entirely sure how to test for that without, well, actually testing for it if someone can find the fun with me while I'm sick, I'll trust they would stick through whatever else life threw at our marraige

Kate Violette @kateviolette.com · 26/07/2026
I don't want to get health again, travel and hike and do all such things, meet someone, only for them to be like "well this sucks, I'm outie" as soon as something prevents me from being as active--whether that's disability again or old age because I sure as fuck wouldn't leave someone like that
1130
Kate Violette @kateviolette.com · 26/07/2026
for real, this is partly why I'm either going to find my future spouse while I'm still sick, or not at all I want a marriage that can survive the bad stuff. I want a marriage where, when we're unable to do all the "active" stuff we used to, that there is still plenty of fun and love left!

Kate Violette @kateviolette.com · 26/07/2026
Right exactly -- if he can't handle precautions, he's going to leave her anyway if she gets sicker again. I understand it feels like an impossible choice on an emotional level, but on a simple math level -- she's already lost him. She can either lose him with her health, or lose him when sick
0272
Kate Violette @kateviolette.com · 26/07/2026
This is equal parts absolutely demoralizing, and absolutely infuriating What the fuck even is marriage for?! If not to help keep each other safe (in all the ways: physically, emotionally, spiritually), to support each other in our goals (which might reasonably include avoiding disability or death!)

--and treated said illnesses when they're not yet bad, instead of condemning people to unnecessary extreme sickness

It's almost like society could run better if we gave a shit about having a working medical system that didn't just tell people serious illnesses were "all in their heads" for years and years and years--

UGH I got a grand jury summons and I would actually be thrilled to do my civic duty (ok I am a curious cat and am very interested why there's a grand jury case happening), but I'm too sick to do so, so I'm gonna have to get an excusal :(

Even having grown up in Maine, Kansas is so weird about its guns (libraries and other places have to post "hey don't bring your gun in here", it's utter silliness where people expect to carry there) that I wouldn't have expected Maine to still have more
