One nice thing about these trying times is that we get to pull ‘quisling’ out of the ol’ vocabulary storage trunk and put it into regular rotation. The reason we can do that sucks, obviously. I just appreciate a word that’s fun to say and gives my q key more exercise.

Is there an app like Pinterest that doesn’t allow AI images? I like it for recipes, but pretty soon I won’t trust them, either. I’m 100% not interested in using fake images to inspire any part of my life (or in supporting further AI generation)

Great Italian idiom for you: specchietto per le allodole. "A mirror for skylarks." Literally, people would hunt larks w/a mirror to attract them into nets. Figuratively, it means using flashy promises/actions to fool gullible people from focusing on real issues. Good thing that's not a problem now!

A traditional device studded with moving mirrors, designed to lure larks into waiting nets. Diabolic! The practice was legalized again in France in 2022, though it is quite controversial. In medieval times, larks were hunted for food. Their tongues were particularly prized. Poor little guys!

A European lark. Note the regal crested feathers on its little head, its brown and white plumage, its teeny beak and orange feet. Would you eat this little guy's tongue? Perish the thought!
