The Clarion once again doing political reporting the way it should be done
Oxford Clarion reports on Cllr Phil Godfrey’s role as the owner of a car servicing and tyre business alongside his claimed concerns about the Lib Dem’s “anti-motorist approach”

(AI actually has been used in science and medicine for decades and is incredibly good at doing things like finding cancer that can’t be seen with the human eye but that is a completely different type of AI then we’re all angry about it and we shouldn’t discuss them in the same conversations TBH)

Yes, the fact that UK solar is an appealing investment opportunity is a GOOD THING because that means it’ll get built. This stuff makes me want to cry.

I don’t understand how… they need a human artist to paint it right. AI can’t paint a building. Is this an artist who likes painting but not making art?? I’m so confused

That’s interesting to know! And yes would be useful context to a story like this. I have to say, it did seem a bit spurious until I saw his logo and he’s clearly trying to associate with University vibes. But knowing that this is an obligation from them too is important for understanding fully.

1 - there isn’t enough rooftop in the country to provide what we need 2 - dribs and drabs here and there isn’t effective in the grid 3 - this approach isn’t scalable as fast as we need Farmland is the best approach - !for now! - that’s why all these projects are 40 year temporary sites

I think it would be really interesting to do some genuinely representative polling of some of the towns and villages near large solar developments. Consultations and campaigns are so naturally self selecting, and you only hear the loudest claiming to speak for “the local people”.

Me in December 2024 referencing my work from earlier in 2024 www.wheresyoured.at/godot-isnt-m...
Throughout these pieces I have repeatedly made the point that — separate to any lack of a core value proposition, training data drought, or unsustainable economics — generative AI is a dead end due to the limitations of probabilistic models that hallucinate, where they authoritatively state things that aren't true. The hallucination problem is one that is nowhere closer to being solved — and, at least with the current technology — may never go away, and it makes it a non-starter for a great many business tasks, where you need a high level of reliability.

There’s a persistent myth that new solar farms don’t really help tackle climate change because panels are “made with coal” and “never pay back” their carbon debt. This is simply false. - UN: solar ~8x cleaner than gas, ~19x than coal per kWh - panels repay CO2 in 4 months; save 57x over life

Shopping is such a fascinating and knotty problem - especially given that many ships being delivered today will still be in operation in 2050. Interested in than projection though. Around 40% current shipping is moving fossil fuels, is that doubling in a Net Zero world?

Lovely people of Oxford/Eynsham etc. for the last 6 months ago I have been plotting and working with a group of lovely people to put on a play. Twelfth Night opens on Monday at Oxford Castle and runs for two weeks. I think it’s something really special, made by local people. Won’t you come along?
The actors playing Orsino, Viola and Olivia demonstrate the shows central love triangle. Orsino gazes lovingly at Olivia, who yearns for Viola, who looks out at us longingly from the centre of the tangle.A bright pink advertising banner for Twelfth Night in front of Oxford’s Castle Mound, with its iconic twin trees. The sky is bright blue with wispy clouds.

They dropped the asking price from more than half a mil by £40,000 - less than 8%. They want to make £330,000 profit - more than a 200% profit margin. If so that's £14,000 per year, more than minimum wage for the first 14 yrs! If the house isn't selling, it's not worth what you're asking.

Now looking at property sale records, this is trickier - I think the name might have changed at some point. As that property name has no sold records. But there's a detached house in that postcode with a name now not coming up on Google that sold in 2002 for £145,000.

Because the #BBC have given us a picture and a village, I've found the house which is on the market for £475,000 - it's a detached 3 bed, but one of the beds is on the ground floor. With the street name and a bit of Google Streetview the property is easy to find. Looks like the name is out front!
