I have now done a whole three months in my new job, and whilst life outside libraries is weird, it’s pretty ok. Still, a whole three months means it’s time for a holiday to reward myself for going back to being a wage slave, so I’m off to Georgia tonight!

When you decide to quit your job we could definitely set ourselves up as a consultancy company called Monkey Butler Librarians Inc. Guaranteed money maker.

I cannot help but feel it is one of those words that really shouldn't ever have to be spelled correctly. There's some Ls and Is & everything else is filler. Also, what is wrong with being a 'go-between librarian'? Or a 'monkey butler librarian', which is what is essentially is?

Liaison. As a former liaison librarian who now works on customer liaison it is quite a crucial word to be able spell and yet it still takes me a couple of goes to get it right.

Something I learned today is that when you live alone and work from home the first time you find out you're losing your voice is when you try to talk in a meeting and end up just croaking at people instead.

Are these the same UK Higher Education providers who have all uncritically subscribed to LLM platforms like ChatGPT Edu? Who continually recontract with the same proprietary software providers like Ex Libris Group for library systems?
The report findings reveal that on a scale of one to five, where one demonstrates institutions are at a reactive stage of digital maturity and five an integrated stage, the aggregated sector score was 2.84. This indicates that, on average, UK higher education providers have moved beyond reactive investment in digital infrastructure and are embedding more strategic approaches and proactive practices.

The results also show:

Reliable, safe and secure digital infrastructure is the highest-rated aspect of the assessment
Digital capability, including AI capability, has the lowest maturity ratings
Funding or investment is the most frequently cited single barrier to further progress, followed by staff capacity and time

Important to note, play dough has gluten in it. Not a problem for 99.9% of coeliacs, but if you’re the idiot kind who can’t keep their fingers out of their mouth then bad things can and do happen. I will not be taking questions on how I know this to be the case.

It’s not really about the finishing though, is it? I was looking at some yarn I span around 20 years ago with the full intention of knitting it into a something, but it turns out I just like having it and petting it occasionally. I love my precious home spun yarns.

Nice, very nice. I’m restricting myself to one project at a time, so am working on some socks for me with yarn I got in NZ last year. I think you should have knitting webinars instead of Counter ones.

“we have chosen to cut services for heavy users because, bitch, you had it worse before the plague that very briefly brought people together & improved access to many things for everyone—so don’t complain, it could be worse” is absolute fucking bullshit.
A pandemic response lasting six years
When the COVID-19 pandemic closed libraries and disrupted access to scholarship, JSTOR increased the free reading limit from six articles every 30 days to 100, helping people continue their research. We kept the higher limit in place long after widespread library closures ended.
During that time, we learned more about how people use the program. Approximately 98% of active free-reading users access 10 or fewer articles in a 30-day period. Setting the limit at 10 preserves the current experience for the great majority of readers while remaining above the program's pre-pandemic limit. Readers who are already in the middle of a 30-day reading period on September 1 will retain the 100-article limit until that period ends. The new limit will begin with their next 30-day period.

Helpful reminder from Elsevier that they have the "legal power" to do what they want with your journals. You have the collective power to take your editorial work elsewhere.

And it’s great that libraries own these outright, so the provider couldn’t suddenly just remove access if it was in their greedy monetary interests to do so…
