As a paediatrician, I urge Australians to be guided by scientific evidence when making decisions on medications | Mike Freelander
Claims of a link between paracetamol use in pregnancy and autism have been repeatedly disproven – despite what the US administration suggests I have treated more than 200,000 patients in almost 40 years of practising medicine. Autism is a complex disorder which can present in many different ways and in a spectrum of severity. Causation is a very important consideration and, as a paediatrician, I know that parents often ask why their child has autism. Particularly in the severe end of the autism spectrum, genetic disorders can present with autistic features; for example Angelman syndrome, Smith-Magenis syndrome, Williams syndrome and many others. However, for the majority of the children who are diagnosed with autism, no cause is found. We also know that the number of children diagnosed with autism in the developed world is increasing. There are many reasons for this, not least that we are better at diagnosing it. However, in my work I often heard the question “why is my child autistic?” Continue reading...

My cousin had an arrest in recovery post cardioversion recently He was resuscitated and is fine His spouse’s response was to: 1. Do a CPR course 2. Buy a defibrillator 3. Make sure the neighbours (they live rurally) knew about and could access the defibrillator When stuff happens, do +ve stuff

Music bringing people together for millennia! 🪈 🎶 About 40,000 years ago, during the #IceAge, this flute was made from a swan’s wing bone. It is one of the World’s oldest known musical instruments! Geißenklösterle cave, Swabian Jura, Germany. Landesmuseum Württemberg, Stuttgart 📷 me #Archaeology
My photo shows an ancient wind intrument dated to the Upper Paleolithic period about 40,000 years ago. It is made from the radius bone of a swan (the thinner of the two long bones in a bird's wing). There are three finger holes. This wind instrument is usually referred to as a ‘flute’. It is incomplete and has been carefully reconstructed from fragments. Dimensions: “The maximum preserved length of flute‭ is ‬126.5‭ ‬mm, the possible length compared to the total length of a swans radius could have been 180‭ ‬to‭ ‬200‭ ‬mm. The asymmetrical diameter of the flute is 10.3‭ ‬x‭ ‬9.1‭ ‬mm”. (Info taken from ‘The Geissenkloesterle Flute - Discovery, Experiments, Reconstruction’ by Susanne Münzel/Friedrich Seeberger/Wulf Hein)

🧵 NGC 6302, also known as the Butterfly Nebula, is a remarkable example of how stars, as they age, can take on some nice shapes sometimes resembling flowers or insects. ➡️ apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap22112... This #Hubble image has been processed to highlight incredible 🔭 🧪 #stellarastro #galactic
#Hubble' s image shows the Butterfly Nebula (NGC 6302), a planetary nebula with a symmetrical structure resembling butterfly wings. In the center, a dense ring of dust obscures the central star. The nebula expands in vivid hues: deep blue (oxygen), bright green (hydrogen), and hot red (nitrogen), creating a bright, layered effect against a black background of space. The gaseous "wings" extend widely, with intricate details and glowing filaments.

The emergency department crisis: Why patient boarding is dangerous
Emergency department boarding is a nationwide crisis caused by staff shortages, lack of inpatient beds, delayed transfers, and systemic inefficiencies, leading to overcrowding, increased patient risk, and worsening conditions for both patients and medical professionals.
