I saw this absolutely splendid driftwood dragon walking to West Angle Bay this morning - what a resplendent item!
A totally resplendent dragon made from driftwood with great big clawed feet and a forked tongue and a very proud bearing. It is in Angle, Pembrokeshire in Wales.

Anyway, I shall be on BBC Radio 5 Live with Nicky Campbell after 9am talking about dog licenses. And at the rate Sybil is destroying tennis balls on this holiday, she’s going to need some sort of permit herself.

V related: when I bought a porch goose for my friend Di and the only way to get it home was for it to sit in the front seat while my husband endured me singing THE GOOSE IS IN THE CAR to the same tune

Big news from the landlocked retriever: today she spent 20 minutes up to her elbows happily fetching her ball in the sea. Look at her proud little face and flappy little ears!

From the government’s welfare breakdown: Spending on disability is £77.1bn. Pensions is over £144bn alone (more than half of pensioners also have a private pension). But mention pensions as being part of welfare and all you get is “well that’s NOT the same!” www.gov.uk/government/p...
Social security spending in Great Britain

In 2025 to 2026 the government is forecast to spend £322.6 billion on the social security system in Great Britain. Total GB welfare spending is forecast to be 10.6% of GDP and 23.6% of the total amount the government spends in 2025 to 2026.

Around 55% of social security expenditure goes to pensioners; in 2025-26 we will spend £177.7 billion on benefits for pensioners in GB. This includes spending on the State Pension which is forecast to be £146.1 billion in 2025 to 2026.

In 2025 to 2026 we will spend £145.0 billion on working age and children welfare. This includes spending on Universal Credit and its predecessors, and non-DWP welfare spending.

In 2025 to 2026 we will spend £77.1 billion on benefits to support disabled people and people with health conditions, and £37.3 billion on housing benefits.

“Hello! It looks like you’re trying to eat a bacon and egg sandwich. Would you like help with that?”

I nudged us over to where a flock of other golden retrievers were merrily enjoying the sea to see if that might encourage her. It did not encourage her.
Two golden retrievers fresh from the sea look slightly confused, ears pricked and tails half wagging, as Sybil has scuttled back up the beach with her tennis ball and is now contentedly shewing it a very safe distance away from the water.

The literal turning point for this dog who will quite happily swim laps in eg a totally illegal pond but who requires a kiddy rock pool if she is to enjoy sea water in any form.

I go to Paternoster Farm in Pembrokeshire every year for my husband’s birthday and it continues to be absolutely *staggeringly* delicious food at its new home (The Old Point House in Angle). As ever, I am so glad I wore my most flexible trousers so we could order most of the puddings.
The beautiful atmospheric Old Point House, decorated in trademark Paternoster Farm dark colours and beautiful found fittings, showing a burnt caramel pannacotta, strawberry sorbet and a fennel seed affogato. West Wales’s best cooking? I wouldn’t remotely know enough for that but it’s definitely my favourite.

The first step of the annual Holiday With Loads of Driving In It is to choose the car-only audiobook - The Grapples of Wrath by @abeewords.bsky.social. Husband and I *love* this series and alternate with SJ Bennett’s HM The Queen Investigates and Dungeon Crawler Carl depending on what’s out when.

Sleep well, sweet Sybil, for neither you or your cuddly custard cream know that you are off to the groomers at 9am tomorrow.
Just a tiny, very small white golden retriever stretched out in bed with her toy next to her foreleg ready to be comfortably chewed on when she next wakes up. I groom her (dog) every day but every three months she goes to the groomers for an in-depth tidy up.

Here’s Genevieve listening to #TheArchers like she’s propping up the bar at The Bull. Ironically, Ambridge could take or leave it, probably because she knew that the most important thing was her and she wasn’t actually in it except by name.

Good morning from Genevieve
A lovely cosy calico cat lies snoring gently on top of a white duvet. Her white paws are stretched out before her, her little pink nose twitches, and her tail is neatly curled over her back leg. Merely an hour ago she was using those same delicate paws to hammer at the bedroom door for a second breakfast which no, Genevieve, you cannot have because you are on a DIET!
