I experienced this as well when my flight from Istanbul to the US was cancelled because of the coup at Ataturk in 2016. Turkish Airlines was forced to put us all up in a hotel for a couple of days until the FAA said we could fly out again.

Yeah, it's the gas and diesel prices that making people reconsider in Texas. Suburbs are only a "nice" place to live when you don't have to pour $100/week into your truck's gas tank.

That is the metric that AI companies are using for their shareholders, though. "We have X number of AI users" because they shoved the AI into their system in a way that it can't be ignored. Like Google Search now using AI by default.

My small liberal city has a pothole hotline. I can call it, leave a message, and the pothole will get filled shortly after that. Happened the same afternoon once (I guess they had an open work order slot.) Unfortunately, the state controls the highways, but at least the city roads are always nice

Thankfully my team is content with a screenshot and MS Paint scribbles on it for mockups, and I have full control over the graphics so I can hand make our icons, but I'm tired of telling Photoshop that no, I don't want it to use gen AI to magic in a background

Part of the problem is that it's built into IDEs at such a core level that you can't escape it. Just using Atlassian JIRA forces you to "use" AI since they have it in their damn search features now.

Normally I know that the federal administration has little control over the supply and demand that drives fuel prices, but in this case we know for a fact that it was the stupid Iran War that trump started that caused this problem.

Governor Kemp only got away with this in Georgia by offering a blanket 5K raise to state employees, including teachers. Of course, he didn't allocate any budget funds for this. Just ordered every school district to do it and figure out how to fund it on their own. We called them Kemp Bribes.

That was the model of the very first modern Internet virtual world, WorldsAway, back around 1995. They charged $2/hour for access via CompuServe. After a year of battling credit card charge backs from people who hadn't realized they spent 100 hours, they caved in and went to a flat $10/month.

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

If you use an AI voiceover in your YouTube video, I'm going to set it as not interested. I want to see real content made by real people, and an AI voiceover with no face visible is the fastest way to tell me you're a slop generator, not a person.

We are currently in a severe drought. The flat land that a data center wants is needed for farming. Land, water, and power usage will pit data centers against existing businesses in Georgia.
