it is bizarre to at the same time abandon every principle he once purported to stand for while asserting he did the opposite — he even handed over his brain as free real estate to a VC I wonder if '00s David would have believed he would succumb to that

yeah that's very true, all of this
010
Kasper Timm Hansen @kaspth.com · 23/09/2026
yeah that sounds very right to me. I fell into all of that junk in 2017 due to some personal issues and it took me years to get out. ironically joining basecamp was one of the things that helped put the nail in the coffin I was 25, and he was what 45 and still doing it 5 years later?

me cognitive dissonancing: fuck yeah this fucking rocks, wtf this fucking sucks

it did seem like his biggest thrill in life was when he could tear into an employee (particularly in front of other people), which I now remembered and is why I didn't find it so sudden/unexpected overall.
110
Kasper Timm Hansen @kaspth.com · 23/09/2026
and who knows why that is? was he being kind or did he think I was more gullible? at the time it seemed genuine to me.
110
Kasper Timm Hansen @kaspth.com · 23/09/2026
> or let himself be convinced that he was entirely right yeah I somehow feel like that's right, though I don't have any proof. but also the week after I quit I heard he tore into an employee over adding that pyramid of hate, so it's not like he was exactly great just because he was nicer to me.

I'm not sure why I'm adding this, it's just all so weird, much, offputting, idk

Kasper Timm Hansen @kaspth.com · 23/09/2026
for sure, and the announcement also took me by surprise. he also sent me an email 2 hours before the all hands where he called in sick and people quit, saying he was still in the dark about how basecamp wronged me. so he wasn't completely gone then either.

I worked there starting june 2019 after dhh asked me to join (due to being on rails core at the time) I don't know how to put it into words, it just didn't seem that sudden to me but maybe that's hindsight
120
Kasper Timm Hansen @kaspth.com · 23/09/2026
yeah, I quit 2-3 weeks before everyone else and yeah certain things were sudden and unexpected, but other things very much not so.

Kasper Timm Hansen @kaspth.com · 23/09/2026
oh he worked hard on that internally before that, the policy announcement was just making it public

I suppose this is only relevant to people who pay for Avo.
110
Kasper Timm Hansen @kaspth.com · 09/09/2026
it looks like you most often release paid packages together in that case dependabot creates a PR for each. however, merging one requires dependabot to rebase all the others and so on for each merge. with a group they get bumped together and I can merge just one PR.
110
Kasper Timm Hansen @kaspth.com · 09/09/2026
Yeah exactly

Kasper Timm Hansen @kaspth.com · 09/09/2026
@adrianthedev.com I think you should recommend that people group Avo dependabot updates, we just put this in: ```yaml groups: avo: patterns: - "avo*" ``` and our open Avo update PRs went from 10 to 1.

tbh I've been kinda fucked up since yesterday, having seen the video of DHH going around. it's been genuinely disturbing to see a person I once knew so far gone and clearly mentally ill.

Awesome! Yeah not saying you have to switch, but I'd just be curious if you try the command and see if it works or if it exposes an issue on our part 😄
