Maria Ressa was awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize (with Dmitry Muratov) for "their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for #democracy and lasting peace." She is the first Nobel laureate from the Philippines. Happy birthday @mariaressa.bsky.social 🥳
A color photograph of Maria Ressa, born October 2, 1963, the pioneering Filipino journalist, co-founder of Rappler, and co-recipient of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize. She is standing at a dark wooden podium, captured from the chest up. Smiling broadly with an expression of joy and animation, she looks slightly to the right of the frame. She wears thin, rimless eyeglasses, a black turtleneck, and a textured, patterned blazer in shades of cream and light pink or soft orange. Her right hand is raised forward with her palm open and fingers extended in a welcoming, expressive gesture, while her left hand grips the flexible neck of a black microphone attached to the podium. The warm, soft-focus background suggests a grand indoor lecture hall or auditorium with architectural details. The bright, direct lighting emphasizes her optimistic and commanding presence, reflecting her historical significance as a fearless champion of freedom of expression and democratic resilience.

Two hours into #DVpit 2026 and we're already seeing some amazing pitches! For anyone new to the event, here is a summary of the rules. For full guidelines go to dvpit.carrd.co
September 30, 2026 8AM-8PM ET
DVPit 2026
* #DVpit (Diverse Voices Pitch) is a Bluesky event for marginalized creators that have been historically underrepresented in publishing to pitch their work to agents & editors.
* Post your pitch on Bluesky on Wednesday, Sept 30, 2026 between 8AM ET - 8PM ET.
* Your pitch must include the #DVpit hashtag (illustrators pitching their art must use #DVArt)
* A like ❤️ from an agent = a query request
* A repost 🔁 from an editor = interest in submission once you've signed with an agent
* A like ❤️ from an editor = editor who takes unagented submissions
* Please do not like or repost a pitch if you are not an agent or an editor. Support other creators by replying to their pitch or quote-reposting their pitches.

I've been seeing a lot of manuscripts lately with dialogue that is *too* formal. Unnaturally formal or overly polished. Spend a day or two listening closely to how people speak to you throughout the day and see how that ends up changing your character's voices and dialogue.

You could say merely that a character loves dogs … or you can show that she breeds pointers; or that she rescues hard-to-place injured strays; or that she trains problem animals that shelters give up on. That’s the power of specific context.  Insight from @tiffanyyatesmartin.bsky.social

Writing the book isn’t always the hardest part. If you’re trying to query agents or reach a bigger publisher, sometimes it’s everything that comes after. Rejection is scary, but you can’t let fear stop you from putting the work out there and trying. #AuthorSky
