The video report of the protests is good. Solid work from Aljazeera getting a lot of the student perspective

And that social democrats/dem socialists can support capitalism and imperialism over what's right when pushed hard enough

For context for folks not in Canada, the TLDR is that both bill c-39, the notwithstanding clause, and section 107 of the labour code can be used to curtail the right to legally strike. They're all also reminders that libs are just cons with more decorum

K Barn @karlbarn.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Between bill c-39, the notwithstanding clause, and section 107 in Canada, I don't know how many more reminders we need that it's time for labour to continue preparing to go back to the roots of illegal strikes, solidarity strikes, etc. It's actually kind of exciting

Is there an efficiency worth destroying the planet for when the most efficient it gets is often writing the code incorrectly and needing to be corrected by someone who knows how to write code in the first place?

We actually already had the productive means to provide a high standard of living for all on the entire planet.

Ultimately, productivity for its own sake buys into the fallacy of luxury automated communism or trickle down economics - the idea that if we just reach some mythical level of productivity we'll be better off. When in fact, and has been outlined in papers by @jasonhickel.bsky.social and others..

Let's explore that comparison of AI, a planet degrading plagiarism machine bad at its job, to factories. Factory automation also had capitalist justification behind it, replacing well paid artisans with highly exploited and poorly paid laborers, all to produce more goods not necessarily

That money is coming from our tax dollars. Be cautious of when Libs talk about sovereignty, because in Carney's case it's being used to justify domestic companies getting subsidies or foreign firms buying up our public land and infrastructure. True sovereignty would be public ownership

I'm a player and a worker, and it steals from workers. That's how I'm affected. It also deskills future generations of programmers, which probably isn't a good thing for our beloved vidja games

Just about finished listening to a deep dive on Taiwan on the fantastic @upstreampodcast.bsky.social podcast. I had an idea how the West doesn't care about the people there and just wants a military base next to China, but I had no idea just how much political oppression has gone on there

I adore Newfoundland. Interesting to hear that about their politics. It reminds me of listening to some tenant organizers in the southern states talk about how part of the reason there was a historically right leaning bent is because no one else went there to engage with people

I feel like you, me, and Mondo might be in the same place here more or less. I'm pretty far left and have no illusions about us being able to vote our way to socialism, but it can be a small tool paired with labour and community movements to make shit better

K Barn @karlbarn.bsky.social · 02/06/2026
Can't blame you at all, honestly. I live rural so I wasn't going to vote in the last federal election either untill, like you, a paper NDP candidate came in. My new riding association seems more determined to get out in the community, which is nice.

Ey, the PSL doesn't look too shabby down there. But yeah, electorally I'm glad the NDP has broken its 8 year streak of being a joke by refreshing it's leadership big time with an Avi Lewis as leader. I hope Tanille Johnston is made to be a part of it - imo she stole the show

..between unions to empower strike funds for said legislation defiance. - be ready for the 2029 election and the lie of voting "strategically"/liberal with the aforementioned steps having been followed because electoralism is just a tiny tool. - maybe normalize data centre/surveillance sabotage?😅

So hear me out, maybe the strat here is: - keep organizing against the issues anyway and build networks and relationships in community and labour - reform labour with rank and file organizing to boot out any hardliners against defying legislation. Then build material solidarity agreements

I have a sneaking suspicion that account is kinda just troll or troll-adjacent judging from the Carney liberal slogan reputation and just shouting at people. Not getting any good faith conversation vibes from it.

a colony like Canada or the USA. I guess things do get muddy when you're talking about a slave colony that revolted and became Haiti, but I digress.

Oh I'd never go that far. We can still point, for example, to Europe. Germany for example would change names, governments, and territories to be Prussia with a side of Holy Roman Empire but there'd still be something to trace back many hundreds of years to form a culture more rich than, say,

cultural traditions, food, etc. Not saying there is no such thing as culture in a colony like Canada, the USA, etc, but that it's nature of being a colony makes it more than a little shallow.

K Barn @karlbarn.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
Oh sure, there is definitely that and its cool indigenous +immigrant origins, but what else? More than just Basketball and Hockey are needed for a truly cohesive culture. Outside of the colonies, you can look at other nations that have hundreds of years of history that weave together art, music,

something more egalitarian, at least back towards a more equitable Keynesianism. Even then, it might swing more to the former before it gets to the latter. Kinda like the pendulum effect spurred by record inequality and austerity. Curious what your thoughts are.

K Barn @karlbarn.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
I agree with that assessment. The best we have is some myth about us/our state being good guy peace keepers that say "eh" a lot. I get the sense right now we're at a crossroads of becoming America's economic vassal state even more or reckoning with the reality of what we are and moving towards
