Allied strategic bombing killed as many French and Chinese as German bombing did British

Although worthy of celebration, it's also slightly suspect how XX Bomber Command, from its bases in China, decided to firebomb as an experiment, killing tens of thousands of Chinese civilians

The two authors of this report are lifelong economists with likely no great subject matter expertise on the topic. Don't take something seriously because it has a government office's stamp on it.

The PBO's cost estimate is the result of a weekend spent playing around with the Transit Costs Project spreadsheet and some typesetting. There is ~0 special insight and treating it as authoritative is silly

With the increasing length of the Expo Line, people often bring up the idea of making the SkyTrain faster by adding skip stop or local/express service patterns In short, local & express services should be possible with additional platforms at 4 stations This thread explores one way to do that
A map depicting Vancouver's SkyTrain network showing all lines with some form of local & express stopping pattern, also showing connecting RapidBus, planned RapidBus, B-Line, SeaBus, and SFU Gondola

Somehow, high-speed trains feel really huge when they operate on ordinary trackage.

If you choose to view UPX and Kitchener as one line (on a messy mix of 2/3 tracks from USRC to Wice) then it's 8 per hour.

Canada, unlike the US doesn’t have infinite money to waste so you’d think someone would care to do some cost control on projects but alas

Exciting news: TTC has awarded a contract to Hitachi for its SelTrac communications based train control (CBTC) on line 2 (according to the announcement, including on Metrolinx’s Scarborough Subway Extension). This will enable reliability, speed, and frequency improvements. @ttcriders.bsky.social

St Clair Old Weston station's budget funds the City of Toronto's St Clair Ave West Area TMP which includes a couple of new road grade separations and a bunch of new roads, intersections, road widening, it's kind of ridiculous

There's something about rollunder space for track level workers (redundant with the napkinholder cages..) that has to do with how prevalent active hours track walks are. Unusual aspect of the subway

there are a lot of people who for some reason like to talk about PEDs as if it's an inherently ridiculous idea at the ttc and it's quite confusing
020
kaptrice 🐦‍⬛ @kaptrice.bsky.social · 05/06/2026
probably complaining about reduction in usable floor space. but half height doors reduce the loading so much by being lighter and having more favourable wind loadings!! tbh the big problem seems to be that staff just don't like the vibes
020
kaptrice 🐦‍⬛ @kaptrice.bsky.social · 05/06/2026
instinctually rejecting half height doors (solves ventilation and lower mass) with platform reinforcement like done for marunouchi and midosuji lines, both at least as old as the subway and similarly not designed for PEDs. all for the precious under-platform rollspace
130
kaptrice 🐦‍⬛ @kaptrice.bsky.social · 05/06/2026
there's a lot of admanance about how the cantilevered platform edges can't support doors and how they can't be reinforced because it removes the rollunder space. but little discussion of putting like. half height doors slightly away from the very edge

This is somehow happening as multiple lines get closed every weekend for construction, as the Lakeshore lines have worse timetables than prepandemic and as overall transit ridership is still like -20% from 2019. everybody just loves the train

Montreal has an urban clearance story but the Toronto expressways resulted in the loss of just 150 homes; there was the money to build through underused railyards and open space but not to do huge takings.

I think YVR has more than SFO and the same as LAX (trading Hangzhou for Sapporo). For some reasons I expected it to be the American airports with the extra Japan route and the Canadian ones with the extra China routes but it's the other way around.
