Finally, Anciients take everything up at least a couple notches. Tight and energetic at another level, their whirlwind of riffing on top of proggy song structures draws enthusiastic response from the crowd. Nice to hear some blues touches in there too. Great show! #MetalSky

Bodypainted blue runes signal Ipomonia's intent to add folk to the mix. The brainchild of singer & multiinstrumentalist Maja Partsch, they alternate melancholic singing w/ djenty spells, Partsch in particular impressive on guitar. Still rough around the edges but clearly talent on display. #MetalSky

Hailing from Aarhus, Advocacy sits at the light end of the prog spectrum. Seriously choppy start incl. tech issues after just one song. But they manage to pick themselves up, and you gotta respect the skills needed to have 3 guitars each doing their own thing at once. Pretty good actually. #MetalSky

When Trump launched “the largest deportation operation in the history of our country” without ICE facilities to accommodate it, inhumane overcrowding was inevitable. Judge Kaplan’s 9/24 ruling shows the results. Diagrams simulating a NYC holding cell in Aug 2025 look like slave ships. 1/5

With that, I choose to head home, skipping pirate metallers Skullclub who are closing the show. Copenhagen Metal Fest was great once again - such a likeable event w/ diehard fans and musicians out in force. First handful of names for 2027 dropped tonight, so I already know I'll be back. #MetalSky

Next up PitchBlack, an experienced death-thrash outfit that saw some positive buzz 20+ years ago. They settle nicely into a mid-tempo groove, but the music never really achieves lift-off for me. A bit more needed here. #MetalSky

Tonight's headliner is Afsky, the band Ole Luk founded after leaving Solbrud and probly the biggest name in Danish black atm. Their galloping, melodic style of black is delivered beautifully by a very tight band. I'm not a big black fan, but this is a great show. #MetalSky

Not in line early enough for my next priority, I instead opt for Embla, an experienced bunch doing post-metal w/ sprinkles of post-hardcore. Nothing wrong w/ that combo, and it's delivered energetically and on point; I could however have used a bit more variation in the songwriting. #MetalSky

Also, Danefae opened by letting us know the guitarist had to drop out b/c of death in the family last night. Not able to find a replacement, they've reworked their songs to have bass and drums fill out for djenty guitarwork. Which tells you something abt level of musicianship on display. #MetalSky

Main stage for maybe most innovative band out of Denmark in recent years, Danefae. Combining folk-ballad style singing w/ djenty instrumentation, they do things I've never heard before. Once again, they raise the game live w/ stunning vocal arrangements & cool choreography. Superb show. #MetalSky

Onto no. 2 stage for Carbon Tomb, new dissodeath outfit w/ 1st album out this year. Sound a bit off initially, but even w/ that fixed, it feels like their act needs a bit of finish. All members bring solid experience, but still feels like aiming for more than they're currently capable of. #MetalSky

Day 3, the main stage is opened by veterans Sacrificial who put out a notable album in the early 90s, then have been on/off before reforming last year. Jokingly embracing their status as oldest band on the bill, they deliver a solid set of snarling thrash, resurrecting their old material. #MetalSky

My final show tonight comes from Maunah, whose debut album is out today. Doom w/ folksy Nordic touches like interesting vocal techniques and the largest flute ever seen on stage. End result feels like doing shrooms & going for a forest stroll w/ a crushing doom backing band. Great stuff. #MetalSky

Back to main stage for headliner Baest. A fan favorite on the Danish scene, Baest is simply a great live act. At it for 10+ years now, it still looks like they're are having a blast whenever they hit the stage. Though latest album's lighter sound means it's no longer all-out OSDM assault. #MetalSky

Now a festival special: Debut show from Vex, a kind of Danish metal supergroup featuring members of Konvent, Orm and Lamentari among others. Turns out they've quietly been engaged in some great songwriting, doing dark sci-fi-themed techdeath w/ grindcore touches. Two words: Blown away. #MetalSky

Hiraki is one of the event's truly avantgarde experiences. Guess it's synthpunk mixed w/ post-hardcore - frontman screaming/reciting lyrics leaned over his keys, postpunkish guitar, great drummer carrying the rhythm. Somehow the trio makes it all come together in a fascinating, artsy mix. #MetalSky

Main stage opens with Skarnet, straight-up muscular rock with plenty of social criticism in their lyrics. Maybe that's why they get bundled with metal? Anyways, solid stuff featuring good guitarwork and showmanship, but also feels somewhat constrained. You need to let loose, guys. #MetalSky

Smallest stage is opened by Parasomnia, fairly new act combining symphonic metal with touches of metalcore and nu metal. Soaring female vocals, chugging riffs, quite deep breakdowns. The sound at what is normally a theatre stage does them no favors but enthusiastic performance nonetheless. #MetalSky

Back at the no. 2 stage for Foreshadower, combining sludge with peaks of post-metal into dark, brooding instrumental soundscapes seeking to convey the weight of human atrocities. Capable and appropriately crushing, they open day 2 in a completely different mood than yesterday.

This is the part many Americans -- including the Bezosites at the Washington Post -- don't understand. Canadians don't see this just as a Trump thing. It's that America elected him twice, and the second time with an even bigger mandate. The problem we're addressing is America, not Trump.

Closing the night is Guttural Disgorge, a young outfit that's been making waves outside Denmark recently. However, as in previous encounters, I conclude their version of slam death is not my thing. Completely reliant on incessant groove and breakdowns, this reads too one-note for me. #MetalSky

Elitist hits the gas pedal straight off, blasting away at top speed. Easily the most technical band tonight, their fast, dissonant, grinding take on death metal is delivered w/ amazing prowess - and charm, too. This is very much my jam; one of the most exciting death bands in Denmark atm. #MetalSky

Apart from the tongue-twisting name, brand new act Hemispherectomy seems a bit miscast for tonight as their sound relies more on hardcore than DM. But their rattatating riffs get the crowd going, and frontman Andreas Truelsen of Plaguemace fame is a huge strength. Man's a born entertainer. #MetalSky

Opening we have Braindead, new act w/ distinction of being Denmark's only all-female OSDM band. Immensely cool to see 4 young women w/ that passion, but also means they get thrown into limelight rather quickly. Still, showing skills and lots to build on; looking forward to following them. #MetalSky

Post-summer opening at one of Copenhagen's underground venues. First up new local outfit Rogue Trader, sporting disappointingly little space armor considering they're named after a WH40k spinoff. They play competent metallic hardcore, guitar shredding almost taking them into speed metal. #MetalSky

Lauren Hart is a beast. You'll know if you're familiar with her work in Once Human. However much respect I have for Alissa White-Gluz, the change is working.
