Well, it's raining all day but managed to prep all the rest of the four joists in the garage so they are ready to install tomorrow once the rain dies down 🌄 Then it will be onto sealing the underside!

My goal is to try and get the roof deck on by November, before it snows! Well, let's say, before capital W Winter. It might be a mild season this year. But I can't put the EPDM on until it's 40 degrees or warmer. The roof will be Zip sheets taped and flashed, so it'll survive until Spring.

I use @chiefarchitect.bsky.social to model and design it, and I use @notion.com + Claude to manage the project and document the build.

Basic specs: - 10x17 w/ 150sqft interior - 2x6 wall construction - Low-slope EPDM roof - Rockwool insulation - Four 36x60" windows - Zip sheets for walls and roof - Advantech subfloor - Electrical, no plumbing - Mini-split heat/AC It's overbuilt, it's essentially a high-perfornance tiny house.

Good progress today: two more joists hung and they are indeed level. 🟩🟩🟩⬜⬜⬜⬜⬜⬜🟩 Polished up my system for hanging them level all by my lonesome. Also the tree went bye-bye since it would have interfered with the studio in the future! Sad but we want to turn that area into a pollinator garden. 🐝

Chief Architect 👍 tbh if you want shed plans there are ones to buy on Etsy and elsewhere too so you don't have to do it all yourself. This is more like a tiny house with a shed skeleton 😁 I just like using the software to plan and model but it's many hours of extra work. August was all planning.

AFAIK wider coverage, they say everything you need for serverless Node apps is stable but that doesn't mean it's still 100% coverage

Tbh it's also something I can see by eyeing it straight down. So if it's noticeable to my eye, it'll be annoying to deal with if I don't adjust it now.

At night I can use the laser level to see there's a slight outward bow on the south side. There's probably a couple ways to relieve that, it's very slight, maybe 1/8". The other side is pretty much perfect.

The workarounds are sub-optimal, but you can add a page to Favorites and then it'll show up in the sidebar. Or create a regular page and mention all the pages (but they still won't be in the sidebar). Or make a DB and group by some property but all DB rows by default open as Peek, not full page.

Alternatively, just add a "Add to sidebar" feature for any page. Then let me drag and drop where I want. Like slack channels or whatever.

The simple fix (from my perspective) is for Notion to create a Page Collection feature. It's like a regular database of pages, but uses regular pages' navigation UX. You add one to the sidebar, and you can nest/organize each page underneath how you like -- they are DB rows but managed as pages.

If I make a new Database, I can add all the properties I want *and* each row is a full page. Great! But then, they don't show up in the sidebar and can't easily be nested/organized how I want.

Why would you want this? Simple: I want a collection of pages *with properties* (or layouts!) organized in the sidebar. I already have pages organized how I want. But they can't have properties -- because those are only part of a database schema.

@notion.com is good but one thing is extremely annoying and I can't believe there's not a good UX for this: you can't make database pages show in the sidebar automatically. - Regular pages show in the sidebar 👍 - Database pages do not 👎 - Database pages have properties 👍 - Regular pages do not 👎

Rim and frame is shimmed and bolted in place, just two stations left to do but unfortunately it's supposed to rain/storm all day tomorrow. Will pick it back up over the weekend or Monday. In the meantime, there's other work to get done and technically the joist assemblies can be made in the garage.

The trade off is I have to detail around the pile saddles because they don't allow for a continuous backing, and I'll have to notch around them. Just a lot of measuring.

I thought about doing that but then it would raise the building a FURTHER 6in from the ground, and it's already 6in above the gravel. There's a height cap on accessory buildings here and I'd be cutting it close. It would have worked I just think it would have looked weird.

This is where my build turns on Hard Mode intentionally 😅 Normally what you could do is either use vertical 4x4 posts and side load the rim joists, or just use 4x6 beams across the channels and put the deck platform on top. That would simplify working around the helical pile saddles.

Outer rim is fully assembled and square! The next part is assembling joist cavities with a prefab underside as a pest/rodent barrier and way to support and protect the insulation. Since I can only work from above, I have a system I'll try for assembling one joist at a time and connecting the bays

About 3/4 of the rim is assembled now. I just need to add two more inner rim joists and make it square 💪 That's tomorrow's job.

For the most part I'm happy with how the two rim beams turned out, but it's dimensional lumber, so a couple places will need planing for the subfloor to sit flush on top. But it's very minimal. The hardest part was just finding the right combo of boards to fit together nicely.

It's a rainy day so I can't finish the next build step today, but I can finish the prep because I can do it in the garage. The wood has to be dry outside to finish the last step which is flashing the top. Tomorrow looks like a better day for that! The finished East/West rim beams are set aside:

Floor package delivery is tomorrow bright and early. I spent Labor Day weekend cleaning and sorting the garage. It's all set for working on this project now, everything has its place. Only thing remaining is wall organization, that's coming Thursday. I also installed lights over my workbench. 😍
