Anne Frank is culturally coded today as "innocent victim" because we beat the Nazis, so we back-project modern concepts of stable citizenship onto her to maintain our cultural view of her as innocent. If we beat ICE, maybe 80 years from now, we will look back similarly on ICE victims today.

Good read. This piece is a nice antidote to Great Man history. People love leaders, but what actually works is organizing: training, political education, and mutual aid. The unglamorous stuff that makes movements durable.

Stop idolizing people. Chomsky’s been the left’s golden boy for as long as I can remember -- and for good reasons in some contexts (others not so much) -- but this is a good reminder that no one is beyond critique. Once again: No gods. No masters. No idols.

End of the line at Birkenau. Hard to grasp how many people just like you and me were massacred here -- while so many decent and proper people looked the other way and sat idly by. It wasn’t monsters who built these camps, but ordinary humans. One of the darkest chapters of modern #history.

The entrance to Auschwitz II–Birkenau, ten years ago today. It’s an eerie place at the best of times, but the thick fog and the long stretches without other visitors made it feel especially heavy. Further in, the ruins of the crematoria and endless rows of foundations were even harder to take in.

Really worth reading the full essay. Graeber argues that capitalism didn’t replace slavery -- it rebranded it. A key mistake of the mode-of-production model was reducing “production” to making things instead of also producing people and social relations that constitute social reproduction.

Few if any experts know more about the deliberate use of starvation as a war crime than Alex de Waal. If he says it's happening, it's so.
ALEX DE WAAL: So, let me say that I've been working on this field of famine, food crisis and humanitarian action for more than 40 years, and there is no case, over those four decades, of such minutely engineered, closely monitored, precisely designed mass starvation of a population as is happening in Gaza today.
