Yes in the grand scheme Next.js is of course a niche, but it’s still the default framework for react right now which is the industry default for web development right now. This leads to lots of usage over a broad spectrum of skill and experience and lots of projects online without optimization

It’s not that hard to get good performance with Next.js (see screenshots for my website), it also provides some powerful tools like partial pre-rendering. But as it’s is the most popular framework the range of quality is of course pretty wide

Got myself a Samsung galaxy a5 for on device testing. Widely used, not too fast so you see perf issues earlier, but still fast enough that it’s not too painful to run dev tools on it

For me personally, RN has the better core principles in not recreating everything, but introducing a directing layer to control native elements

the "esc" key on a keyboard is a holdover from early-'90s personal computers. on some models it would dispense a can of escargot out of one of the unused drive bays. they put it in the corner so you wouldn't press it by accident because you only got three of them. i pushed it once and got grounded

I propose we replace semantic versioning with pride versioning
Diagram with large number: 2.7.123
First “2” is commented: Proud version. Bump when you are proud of the release
Second “7” is commented: Default version. Just normal/okay releases
Third “123” is commented: Shame version. Bump when fixing things too embarrassing to admit

the internet was totally worth it, just for doordash alone. the fact that i can press an internet button and receive food on my doorstep like an abandoned baby at an orphanage. magnificent.

dream UX of Deutsche Bahn, instead of just redirecting me after logging in, show me a message that I'm already logged in and that I have to navigate to the app manually
An error message showing "You are already logged in. Please go back to bahn.de or to the DB Navigator app"

That was a nice read, thank you. Also I was trying to come up with a smart reply, on how file based routing could introduce overlaps with architecture, but at the end it’s still just an implementation detail

😂 I love this so much. This is a landing page for Half Life 2’s 20th aniversary (www.half-life.com/en/halflife2...), and it has an easter egg; you can enable the object grabber from the game and wreck havoc on the page:

It’s funny how ChatGPT established a clear and recognizable art style for its images.
A cozy, modern home workspace with a relaxed individual seated comfortably near a desk. The setup includes a laptop, notes, and a coffee cup, hinting at software development and consulting work. Warm, ambient lighting and indoor plants create a peaceful atmosphere, while tech and business books on nearby shelves add a professional touch. A large window provides a view of an urban landscape, possibly Berlin, enhancing the calm and productive ambiance.

Hard to pin down specifics, I think the most important part is being persistent and patient. A lot of time is needed to build the muscle memory to correctly hold the bow, have the right pressure,… Until then it’s unfortunately a lot of ugly scratchy sounds you have to endure 😅

in case you missed it, the first react compiler beta dropped among other things is official support for React 17+ so you can try it even with an old React (and yes, version 17 is four years old, which is about seventy five in the javascript years)
